Genesis 1

 

     In the beginning God created (make something out of nothing) the heavens and the earth (land). And the earth was without form (shapeless), and void (empty); and darkness was on the face of the deep (abyss, sea). And the Spirit of God was soft, relaxed on the face of the waters.

     And God said, be Light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good (excellent, valuable): and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

     And God said, Be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and divide the waters from the waters. And God made the expanse and divided the waters under the expanse from the waters above the expanse: and it was exactly right.

     And God called the expanse Heavens. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

     And God said, Waters under the heaven gather to one place, and let the dry land be seen: and it was exactly right. And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathered waters He called seas: and God saw that it was good (excellent, valuable).

     And God said, Earth sprout grass, the herb (green plants) sowing seed, and the tree making fruit after his kind, whose seed was in itself on the earth: and it was exactly right. And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself after his kind: and God saw that it was good (excellent, valuable).

     And the evening and the morning were the third day.

     And God said, Be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years. And let them be for lights in the expanse of the heaven to give light on the earth: and it was exactly right. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: He made the stars also.

     And God set them in the expanse of the heaven to give light on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good (excellent, valuable).

     And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

     And God said, Waters spring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl to fly above the earth in the open expanse of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good (excellent, valuable).

     God blessed (make holy, pronounce divine favor) them and said, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. 

     And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

     And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and moving thing, and animals of the earth after his kind: and it was exactly right. And God made the living creatures of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and everything that moves on the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good (excellent, valuable).

     And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the animals, and over all the earth, and over every moving thing that moves on the earth.

     So God created (shaped, formed) man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

     And God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill, (not refill) the earth (raising families multiplies His eternal glory), and subdue it: and rule over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

     And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb (green plant) bearing seed, which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; it will be to you for food.

     And to every animal of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that moves on the earth, in which is life (soul), I have given every green herb for food: and it was so. 

     And God saw everything that He made, and behold, it was very (exceedingly) good (excellent, valuable). And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. 

 

     *(An aleph toph, the first and last letters in the Hebrew alphabet are seen often, but untranslated: throughout the Old Testament. It is the Hebrew of alpha and omega. God’s signature.

 

 

 

Genesis 2

 

     The heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host (that which goes forth) of them. And on the seventh day God ended His work He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work that He had made. And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified (set it apart) it: because in it He rested from all His work that God created to make (JP Greene). These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, and every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: 

     for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there wasn’t a man to till the ground. But a mist went from the land and watered the whole face of the land.

     And the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden (pleasure, delight, luxury) and there he put the man whom he had formed.

     And out of the ground the LORD God grew every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good (excellent) and evil (bad).

     And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was divided and became four heads: The name of the first is Pison: it surrounds the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold: and the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. And the name of the second river is Gihon: it that surrounds the whole land of Ethiopia. And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: it goes toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates. 

     And the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to dress (serve) it and to keep/guard it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, do not eat of it: for in the day that you eat of it dying (spiritual death) you will die (physical death). (Contact with God who is life, is broken).

     And the LORD God said, It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper that fits him. And out of the ground the LORD God formed every animal of the field, and every bird of the air; and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them: and whatever Adam called every living creature, that was its name.

     And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every animal t of the field; but for Adam there was not found a helper that fit him.

     And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept: and He took one of his ribs (side), and closed up the flesh underneath;

     And the rib, that the LORD God had taken from man, He made (built) a woman, and brought her to the man. And Adam said, This now at last is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she will be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

Therefore a man is to leave his father and his mother, and cleave (cling, hold tight) to his wife: and they will be one flesh.

     And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Genesis 3

 

1 And the serpent was more subtle (shrewd, crafty, sly) above every animal of the field that the LORD God made. And he said to the woman, Has God said, You shall not eat from any tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 

3 but of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God said, Don’t eat of it, or touch it, or you will die.

4 And the serpent said to the woman, You won’t surely die:

5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it, then your eyes will be opened, and you will be as gods, knowing good and evil. 

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate and gave to her husband with her; and he ate.

7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.

8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking up and down in the garden in the breeze of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

9 And the LORD God called to Adam, and said to him, Where are you?

10 And he said, I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

11 And He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree, I commanded you not to eat? 

12 And the man said, The woman whom you gave me, she gave me of the tree and I ate.

13 And the LORD God said to the woman, What have you done? And the woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate. 

14 And the LORD God said to the serpent, Because you did this you are cursed more than all animals, more than every animal of the field; on your belly you will go, and you will eat dust all the days of your life: 

15 And I will put hatred between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He will bruise your head, and you will bruise His heel.

16 To the woman He said, I will greatly multiply your sorrow (+ pain, hardship, labor, toil) and your conception (pregnancy). In sorrow you will bear children. Your desire (longing, craving) will be toward your husband (man) and he will rule over you.

17 And to the man he said, Because you listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree, that I commanded you, saying, Don’t eat from it, the ground is cursed because of you; in sorrow you will eat of it all the days of your life; 

18 Thorns and thistles will it bring for you; and you will eat the herb of the field; 

19 By the sweat of your face you will eat bread (+food grain), until you return to the ground; for out of it you were taken: for you are dust, and to dust you will return. (cut off from God who is life)

20 And the man called his wife's name Eve; because she became the mother of all living. 

21 And the LORD God made for the man and his wife coats of skin and clothed them.

22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man has become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, so he won’t reach out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever (in this prideful condition). 

23 Therefore the LORD God sent him out of the garden of Eden, to work the ground from where he was taken. 

24 And He drove the man out; and He placed (set to dwell) at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubim (masculine, awesome 4-winged beings of light), and a flaming sword whirling (to turn) around, to guard the way (back to) the tree of life. 

 

Genesis 4

 

     And the man knew Eve (living) his wife; and she conceived, and birthed Cain (possession), and said, I have gotten a man with the LORD. And she birthed his brother Abel (breath). And Abel tended sheep (small animals, sheep, goats) and Cain worked the ground.

     And at the end of the year, Cain brought from the fruit of the ground a gift to the LORD. And Abel, he brought of the firstborn (birthright) of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD looked at (respected, gazed) at Abel and his gift: but to Cain and to his offering He didn’t look. And Cain’s anger burned greatly, and his face fell.

     And the LORD said to Cain, Why are you enraged? And why is your face fallen? If you do what is good, pleasing, joyful, will you not be elevated, exalted? But if you don't do what is good, pleasing, joyful, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, and you are to rule over him.

     And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and as they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and killed him. And the LORD said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother? And he said, I don’t know: Am I my brother's keeper (guard)? 

     And He said, What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries to Me from the ground. And now you are cursed more than the ground, which opened her mouth to take your brother's blood from your hand; (the thing he trusted instead of God was taken, to hopefully return him to trusting in his Source instead of the stuff the Source made). When you till the ground, it won’t again give you its strength; you will be a vagabond and a fugitive on the earth.

     And Cain said to the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. Look, You have driven me out today from the face of the ground; and I will be hidden from your Face; and I will be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it will be that anyone that finds me will kill me.

     And the LORD said to him, If anyone kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him 7 times.

 

(dictionary definition of vengeance: punishment inflicted or retribution exacted for an injury or wrong)

 

(The first wrong was satan going against God. Here it would be wrong to, take Cain’s life in retribution because ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’ 

     God made Cain. All people belong to God first because He made them and holds up their life and breath. He was giving Cain time to turn away evil and return to right thinking and right living, to turn back to God. 2 Peter 3:9 God is ‘longsuffering, not willing that any perish.’)

 

     And the LORD set a mark on Cain, so any finding him wouldn’t kill him. And Cain went out from the Presence (face) of the LORD and dwelt in the land of Nod (wandering), on the east of Eden (pleasure). 

     And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and birthed Enoch (dedicated): and he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. And to Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.

     And Lamech took two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of those that dwell in tents, and of those that have livestock. And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all those that handle the harp and organ (possibly flute, panpipe). And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, a sharpener, hammerer metal worker in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah. 

     And Lamech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice you wives of Lamech, listen to my speech: for I have killed a man who wounded me, and a young man who hurt me. If Cain is avenged seven times, truly Lamech seventy-seven times. (human pride expanding beyond God’s ‘eye for an eye.’)

     And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth (appointed): For God, said she, has appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain killed. And to Seth, to him also was born a son; and he called his name Enos (man): then men began to call on the name of the LORD.

 

Genesis 5

 

     This is the book of the descendants of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God He made him; Male and female He created them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created ( bara – make something from nothing).

     And Adam lived 130 years, and fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth (compensation): and the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were 800 years: and he bore sons and daughters: and all the days that Adam lived were 930 years: and he died.

     And Seth lived 105 years and begat Enos. And Seth lived after he begat Enos 807 years, and begat sons and daughters: and all the days of Seth were 912 years: and he died.

     And Enos lived 99 years, and begat Cainan: snd Enos lived after he begat Cainan 815 years, and begat sons and daughters: and all the days of Enos were 900 years: and he died.

     And Cainan lived 70 years, and begat Mahalaleel: And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel 840, and begat sons and daughters: and all the days of Cainan were 910: and he died.

     And Mahalaleel lived 65 years, and begat Jared: and Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared 830 years, and begat sons and daughters: and all the days of Mahalaleel were 895 years: and he died. 

     And Jared lived 162 years and begat Enoch. And Jared lived after he begat Enoch 800 years, and begat sons and daughters: and all the days of Jared were 962 years: and he died. 

     And Enoch lived 65 years, and begat Methuselah: and Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah 300 years, and begat sons and daughters: and all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 

     And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. (He didn't die, God took him to heaven alive.

     And Methuselah lived 187 years, and begat Lamech: and Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech 782 years, and begat sons and daughters: and all the days of Methuselah were 969 years: and he died.

     And Lamech lived 182 years, and begat a son: and he called his name Noah (rest), saying, This one will comfort us from our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD has cursed. And Lamech lived after he begat Noah 595 years, and begat sons and daughters: and all the days of Lamech were 777 years: and he died.

     And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 

Genesis 7 

 

     And the LORD said to Noah, Come, all your house, into the ark; for I have seen you righteous before Me in this generation.

     From every clean animal take to yourself by sevens, the male and his female: and of animals that are not clean by two, the male and his female. And of the birds of the heavens by sevens, the male and his female; to keep seed alive on the face of all the earth.

     For after seven more days, and I will cause rain on the earth forty days and forty nights; and wipe away every living substance that I have made from off the face of the earth.

     And Noah did all that the LORD commanded him. Noah was 600 years old when the flood was waters on the earth. And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

     Of clean animals, and of animals that are not clean, and of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth, two by two they went into Noah into the ark, male and female, as God commanded Noah.

     And after seven days the waters of the flood came on the earth: In the 600th year of Noah's life, in the second month, the 17th day of the month, this day all the fountains of the great deep and the windows of the heavens were opened. And the rain was on the earth 40 days and 40 nights. In that same day Noah entered, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark; they, and every living thing after his kind, and all the animals after his kind, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after his kind, and every flying creature after his kind, every bird of her wing. And they went into Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, in which is the breath of life. And those going in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him.        And the LORD shut (sealed) behind him.

     And the flood was forty days on the earth; and the waters increased, and lifted the ark, and it rose high above the earth. And the waters were exceedingly mighty on the earth; and the ark floated on the face of the waters. And the waters were exceedingly mighty on the earth; and all the high mountains, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Twenty-two feet upward the waters were mighty; and the mountains were covered.

    And all flesh died that moved on the earth, both of flying creatures, and of animals, and living things, and of every teeming thing that swarm on the earth, and every man: all in whose nostrils was the breath of life, all that was on the dry land, died.

     And every living thing that was on the face of the ground was wiped off, both man, and animals, and the creeping things, and the flying creatures of the heaven; they were destroyed from the earth: but only Noah remained, and those that were with him in the ark.

     And the waters were mighty on the earth 150 days.

Genesis 6

 

     When men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, the sons of God (bene ha Elohim – angels) saw the daughters of men that they were fair (beautiful); and they took wives of all they chose.

     And the LORD said, My spirit will not always strive with man. He is flesh: his days will be an 120 years. There were giants in the earth in those days; after, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them, these became famous heroes from ancient times.

     And GOD saw that the evil of man was great in the earth, and every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all day long. And the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart (innermost being). And the LORD said, I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and animal, and the creeping thing, and the birds of the heavens; for I regret that I made them.

     But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. These are the descendants of Noah: Noah was a just man (the word just is 'right,' he did right in God’s eyes) and perfect (without blemish) in his generations (genetics uncorrupted by angelic intermarrying), and Noah walked with God.

     And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 

     The land was ruined before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked on the earth, and behold, it was ruined; for all flesh had corrupted (perverted) his way on the earth.

     And God said to Noah, The end of all flesh is come before Me. The earth is filled with violence through them. And behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

     Make yourself an ark of cypress timbers; make rooms in the ark and cover it inside and out with asphalt. Make it 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. Make an 18-inch window below the roof all the way around the ark; and set the door of the ark in its side; make it with lower, second, and third stories. 

     Behold this, I, even I, am bringing a flood of waters on the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; and everything that is in the earth will die. 

     I establish My covenant with you; and you will come into the ark, you, and your sons, and your wife, and your sons' wives with you. And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every kind you will bring into the ark, to keep alive with you; they are to be male and female. Of birds after their kind, and of animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two from each kind will come to you, to keep alive.

     And you take for yourself of all food that is eaten and gather to yourself; and it will be food for you, and for them. Noah did all that God told him, he did. 

 

Genesis 8

 

     And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the animals with him in the ark: and God made a wind pass over the earth, and the waters subsided. The fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was withheld. And the waters went off the earth continually: at the end of 150 days the waters were gone.

     And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the 17th  day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat. And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first of the month, the tops of the mountains were seen.

     At the end of 40 days, Noah opened the window of the ark he had made. And he sent out the raven, going out and returning, until the waters dried up from off the earth.

8 Also he sent out the dove from him, to see if the waters were reduced from off the face of the ground. but the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned to him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of all the earth: then he put out his hand, and took her, and pulled her to him into the ark. 

     And he waited anxiously another seven days; and sent the dove out of the ark again. And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, behold, a plucked olive leaf was in her mouth: so Noah knew that the waters had receded from off the earth.

     And he waited another seven days; and sent the dove; she didn't return to him

     And in the 601st year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and saw, the face of the ground was dry. 

     And in the second month, on the 27th day of the month, the earth was dried. And God spoke to Noah, saying, Go out of the ark, you, and your wife, and your sons, and your sons' wives with you. Every living thing that is with you of all flesh, both of flying creatures, and of animals, and of every creeping thing that creeps on the land, bring out with you; that they may swarm in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply on the earth.

     And Noah went out, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him: every animal, every creeping thing, and every flying creature, and whatever creeps on the earth, after their kinds, went out of the ark.

     And Noah built an altar to the LORD; and took of every clean animal, and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. (the reminder of the promise of our ‘so great salvation’ from His infinite love)

     And the LORD smelled a sweet fragrance; and the LORD said in His heart, I will not again curse the ground because of man; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; I will never again strike every living thing, as I have done. While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night will not cease. 

 

Genesis 9

 

      God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you will be on every animal of the earth, and on every flying creature of the air, on all that creeps on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea; into your hand they are given. Every creeping thing that lives will be food for you; even as the green plants I have given you all things. But flesh in its life, its blood, don’t eat it. 

     And I will definitely demand your blood of your lives; at the hand of every animal I will demand it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother I will demand the life of man. Whoever sheds (pours out) man's blood, by man his blood is to be poured out: for in the image of God, He made man. 

     And you be fruitful, and multiply; swarm over the earth, and multiply on it. 

     And God spoke to Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, Even I, behold I am establishing My covenant with you, and with your seed after you, and with every living creature with you, of the flying creatures, of the animals, and of every living creature with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every living thing of the earth. 

I have established My covenant with you; and will not cut off again all flesh by the waters of a flood; or will there be again a flood to destroy the land. 

     And God said, This is the sign of the covenant that I give between Me and you and every living soul that is with you, for everlasting generations: I have set My bow in the cloud, and it will be a sign, a covenant between Me and the earth. 

 

     Ezekiel 1 shows us the glory of God, a sapphire throne in heaven on which sits the fiery amber gemstone form of a man flashing forth rainbows.

 

     And when I gather clouds on the earth the will bow will be seen in the clouds. And I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living soul of all flesh; and the waters of a flood will not come again to destroy all flesh. 

And the rainbow will be in the clouds; and I will see it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living soul of all flesh that is on the earth.      

And God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth. 

     And the sons of Noah that went out of the ark, were Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan. These three are the sons of Noah: and from them the whole earth was overspread (dispersed).

     And Noah began to be a man of the ground, and he planted a vineyard: and he drank of the wine and was drunk; and he bared himself inside his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father’s nakedness, and told his two brothers outside. 

And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered their father’s nakedness. Their faces were backward, and they did not see their father's nakedness. 

     And Noah woke from his wine and knew what his younger son had done to him. And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants he will to his brothers. 

     And he said, Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem; and Canaan will be his servant. God will expand Japheth, and he will dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan will be a slave to them. 

     And Noah lived 350 years after the flood. And all the days of Noah were 950 years: and he died. 

Genesis 10

 

     And these are the descendants of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and sons were born to them after the flood: The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. 

     And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.

     And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. By these were the shores of the nations divided in their lands; by his tongue, by their families, in their nations. 

     And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtecha: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.

     And Cush begat Nimrod (rebellion): he began to be a mighty one in the earth. He was a mighty hunter before (face) the LORD: it was said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD. And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 

     Out of that land went Asshur, and built Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah, and Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city.

     And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim, and Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim (Philistines) and Caphtorim.

    And Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn, and Heth, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite, and the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite, and the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward the families of the Canaanites were routed. 

    And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as you come to Gerar, as far as Gaza; as you go toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even to Lasha.

     These are the sons of Ham, their families, their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.

     To Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber (Hebrews), the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born. The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.

     And the children of Aram; Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash. 

     And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Salah begat Eber. And to Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth (land mass) divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.

     And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah, and Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah, and Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba, and Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were the sons of Joktan. And their dwelling was from Mesha, as you go toward Sephar a mountain of the east.

     These are the sons of Shem, their families, their tongues, in their lands, their nations.

     These are the families of the sons of Noah, their descendants, in their nations: from these were divided the nations of the earth after the flood.

 

Genesis 11

 

     All the earth was of one language, and of one speech. And as they journeyed from the east, that they found a valley in the land of Shinar (two rivers); and they dwelt there. And they said each man to his friend, Come, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and asphalt for cement. 

     And they said, Come, let’s build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens. and let us make ourselves a name, so we not be scattered on the face of all the earth (the opposite of what God had told them to do).

     And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of Adam built. And the LORD said, See, the people are one, the language is one; and they begin to do this: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they think to do.

     Come, let us go mix up their language, that they may not hear each man his neighbor’s speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from there on the face of all the earth: and they stopped building the city.

     Therefore is the name of it called Babel (confusing); because there the LORD mixed up the language of all the earth: and from there LORD scattered them abroad on the face of all the earth.

     These are the descendants of Shem (name): Shem was 100 years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood. And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad 500 years, and begat sons and daughters. 

     And Arphaxad lived 35 years, and begat Salah. And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah 403 years, and begat sons and daughters.

     And Salah lived 30 years, and begat Eber. And Salah lived after he begat Eber 403 years, and begat sons and daughters.

     And Eber lived 34 years, and begat Peleg. And Eber lived after he begat Peleg 430 years, and begat sons and daughters.

     And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu. And Peleg lived after he begat Reu 209 years, and begat sons and daughters.

     And Reu lived 32 years, and begat Serug. And Reu lived after he begat Serug 207 years, and begat sons and daughters.

     And Serug lived 30 years, and begat Nahor. And Serug lived after he begat Nahor 200 years, and begat sons and daughters.

     And Nahor lived 29 years, and begat Terah. And Nahor lived after he begat Terah 119 years, and begat sons and daughters.

     And Terah lived 70 years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

     Now these are the descendants of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot. And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees.

     And Abram and Nahor took themselves wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

     But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

     And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they left Ur of the Chaldees with them to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran, and dwelt there.

     And the days of Terah were 205 years: and Terah died in Haran.

Genesis 12

 

     And the LORD said to Abram, Go from your land, from your relatives, from your father's house, to a land I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and you will be a blessing: And I will bless those that bless you and curse him that despises you: and in you all families of the earth will be blessed.

     Abram went as the LORD had said to him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was 75 years old when he left Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his nephew, and all their possessions they had gathered, and the souls they had gotten in Haran; and they went to the land of Canaan; and came into the land of Canaan. And Abram passed over the land to the place of Sichem, to the great tree of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land. 

     And the LORD appeared to Abram, and said, To your seed I will give this land. And he built an altar there to the LORD who appeared to him. 

     And he moved from there to a mountain on the east of Bethel, and set his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east. And there he built an altar to the LORD, and called on the name of the LORD.

     Abram journeyed, going on toward the south. And a famine was in the land: and Abram went down to Egypt to stay there; for the famine was severe in the land.

     And when he neared Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, Look, I know that you are a beautiful woman to look at, so when the Egyptians see you, they will say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but keep you alive. Please say you are my sister so it will be well with me because of you and my soul live because of you.

     And when Abram came into Egypt, the Egyptians saw the woman was very beautiful. The princes of Pharaoh saw her and praised her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.

     And he did good to Abram for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.

     But the LORD touched Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife (Ishah, bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh). 

     And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What have you done to me? Why didn’t you tell me that she was your wife? Why did you say, She is my sister? I took her to me for a wife: now behold your wife, take her, and go.

And Pharaoh ordered his men, and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had. 

 

 

     Genesis 13

 

     And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south. And Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai, to the place of the altar he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.

     And Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents. And the land was not able to bear them to dwell together for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together. And there was a strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.

     And Abram said to Lot, Please, let there be no strife, between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brothers. Isn’t the whole land before you? Please separate yourself from me: if you go to the left, then I will go to the right; or if you choose the right then I will go to the left. 

     And Lot lifted his eyes, and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as you come to Zoar, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Then Lot chose all the circle of the Jordan; and Lot moved east: and they separated each man from his brother.

     Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the circle of cities and moved his tent toward Sodom. But the men of Sodom (burning) were exceedingly evil sinners before the LORD. 

     And the LORD said to Abram, after Lot separated from him, Now lift your eyes, and look from the place where you are north, south, east, and west for all the land you see, I will give it to you and to your seed forever.

     And I will make your seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can count the dust of the earth, then your seed also can be counted. Rise up and walk through the length and width of the for I will give it to you. Then Abram moved his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron (communion), and built there an altar to the LORD. 

Genesis 14

 

    And in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations. These made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.

     All these were joined together in the valley of Siddim, which is the salt sea. 12 years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the 13 year they rebelled (revolted from paying taxes). And in the 14th year Chedorlaomer came, and the kings that were with him, and struck the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim, and the Horites in their mount Seir, unto Elparan, which is by the wilderness. And they turned, and came back to Enmishpat, which is Kadesh, and struck all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar.

    And the king of Sodom went out, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the valley of Siddim, with Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; 4 kings against 5.

    And the valley of Siddim was full of asphalt pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled and fell there; and those that remained fled to the mountain.

And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their food, and went their way. And they took Lot, Abram's nephew, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and left. He dwelt in Sodom.

    And one came that escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these had a covenant with Abram. 

    And when Abram heard that his brother was captured, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, 318, and chased them unto Dan. And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and struck them, and chased them to Hobah, which is on the left of Damascus.

     And he brought back all the goods, and returned his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.

    And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, it being the king’s valley.

    And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was the priest of the Most High God. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the Most High God, possessor of heaven and earth.

     And blessed be the Most High God, who delivered your enemies into your hand. And he (Abram) gave him (Melchizedek) tithes (tenths) of all.

    And the king of Sodom said to Abram, Give me the people, and take the goods for yourself. And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lifted up my hand to the LORD, the Most High God, the possessor of heaven and earth, that I will not take from a thread or shoe buckle. I will not take anything that is yours, so you can’t say, I made Abram rich.

    Except what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their share.

Genesis 15

 

    After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, Don’t be afraid, Abram: I am your shield, and your exceeding great reward.

    And Abram said, Lord GOD, what will You give me, seeing I am childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus. And Abram said, Behold, You have given me no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is my heir.

    And, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, This one will not be your heir; but he that will come out of your own body will be your heir. And He brought him outside, and said Look now toward heaven, and count the stars, if you be able to count them: and He said to him, So will your seed be.

    And he believed in the LORD; and He counted it to him for righteousness. 

    And he said to him, I am the LORD that brought you out of Ur of the Chaldees to give you this land to inherit it. And he said, Lord GOD, by what will I know that I will inherit it?

    And He said to him, Take for Me a heifer of 3 years old, and a she goat of 3 years old, and a ram of 3 years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon. And he took to Him all these, and divided them in the middle, and laid each piece opposite the other: but he did not divide the birds. And when the birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

    And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram; and, lo, a horror of great darkness fell on him. And He said to Abram, Know for certain that your seed will be a foreigners in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them; and they will oppress them 400 years; And that nation, whom they serve, I will judge: and afterward they will come out with great property, possessions.

    And you will go to your fathers in peace; you will be buried in a good old age. But in the 4th generation they will come here again: for the iniquity (perversity, depravity) of the Amorites is not yet full.

    And as the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp passed between those pieces. 

    In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram saying, To your seed I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates: The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.

 

 

Genesis 16

 

    Now Sarai Abram's wife bore him no children. And she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar (flight). And Sarai said to Abram, Behold now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing: Please, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

    And Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

    And Sarai said to Abram, My wrong be on you: I have given my maid into your bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and you.

    But Abram said to Sarai, Behold, your maid is in your hand; do to her as you see it. And when Sarai dealt hardly (afflicted) her, she fled from her face.

    And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

    And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, Where have you come from? And where are you going? And she said, I am running from the face of my mistress Sarai. 

    And the angel of the LORD said to her, Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands. And the angel of the LORD said to her, I will greatly multiply your seed, too many to count for multitude.  And the angel of the LORD said to her, Look, you are with child, and will bear a son, and will call his name Ishmael (God will hear); because the LORD has heard your affliction.

    And he will be a wild ass of a man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he will dwell in the presence of all his brothers.

    And she called the name of the LORD that spoke to her, You God see me: for she said, Have I also here seen Him that sees me?

     Therefore the well was called The Well of the Living One Seeing me; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

    And Hagar bore Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bore, Ishmael. And Abram was 86 years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

 

Genesis 17

 

     And when Abram was 99 years old, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said to him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be perfect, complete. And I will make My covenant between Me and you and will multiply you exceedingly. (A covenant with the Almighty Creator of the universe.)

     And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you will be a father of many nations. You will no longer be called Abram (high father), but your name will be Abraham (father of multitudes); for I have made you a father of many nations.

     And I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings will come out of you. And I will make My covenant between Me and you and your seed after you in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you, and to your seed after you.

     And I will give you and your seed after you the land where you are dwelling, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

     And God said to Abraham, You will keep My covenant, you, and your seed after you in their generations. This is My covenant that you will keep between Me and you and your seed after you; Every male child among you will be circumcised. 

     And you will circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and you. He that is eight days old will be circumcised among you, every male child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any foreigner, that is not of your seed. He that is born in your house, and he that is bought with your money, must be circumcised: and My covenant will be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

     And the uncircumcised male child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul will be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.

     And God said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, do not call her name Sarai (princess), but Sarah (noblewoman) will be her name. And I have blessed her and have given you a son from her: yes, I have blessed her, and she will become nations; kings of people will be from her.

     Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said in his heart, Shall a child be born to him that is 100 years old? And will Sarah, that is 90 years old, give birth?

     And Abraham said to God, O that Ishmael might live before You!

     And God said, Sarah your wife (ishah-bone of your bone) will bear you a true son; and you will call his name Isaac (laughter): and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

     And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; he will beget 12 princes, and I will make him a great nation.

     But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, who Sarah will bear to you at this appointed time next year.

     And He finished talking with him, and God ascended from Abraham. And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin that same day, as God had said to him.

     Abraham was 99 years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. And Ishmael, his son, was 13 years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. That same day Abraham was circumcised, and Ishmael his son. And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money from foreigners, were circumcised with him.

 

Genesis 18

 

     And the LORD appeared to him in the terebinth (turpentine trees) of Mamre (strength, fatness): and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day. And he lifted his eyes and looked, and three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, and said, My Lord, if now I have found favor in Your sight, Please do not pass away from your servant.

     Please let a little water be brought and wash Your feet and lean on the tree: And take a bite of food and sustain your hearts; after that you may go: for this is why you came to your servant. And they said, Do as you have said.

     And Abraham ran to the tent to Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly 3 measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes on the hearth. And Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man; and he hurried to prepare it. And he took curds, and milk, and the calf he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they ate.

     And they said to him, Where is Sarah your wife? And he said, See, in the tent. 

     And He said, I will certainly return to you at the time of life; and Sarah your wife will have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and getting on in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. So Sarah laughed within herself, saying, Will I, being old, will I have pleasure, my lord being old also?

     And the LORD said to Abraham, Why has Sarah laughed at this saying, Indeed, truly? Shall I bear a child, who am old?

     Is anything too hard for the LORD? 

     At the set time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah will have a son.

     Then Sarah denied, saying, I didn’t laugh; for she was afraid. And He said, No. You did laugh.

     And the men got up and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.

     And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham what I’m doing? Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him. For I have known him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they will keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring on Abraham what He has spoken of him.

     And the LORD said, The cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great because their sin is very grievous; I will go down now, and see if they have done completely according to the cry that is coming to Me; and if not, I will know. And the men turned from there and went toward Sodom: but Abraham still stood before the LORD.

     And Abraham drew near, and said, Will You sweep away the just with the wicked? Perhaps there are 50 righteous in the city: will You destroy and not spare the place for the fifty just that are in it?

     That be far from You to do this, to kill the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous be as the wicked, that be far from You: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

     And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom 50 righteous in the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.

     And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken on myself to speak to the Lord, I am but dust and ashes: Perhaps 5 are lacking from the 50 righteous: will You destroy all the city for lack of 5? And He said, If I find there 45, I will not destroy it. 

And he spoke to him again and said, Perhaps 40 are found there. And He said, I will not do it for 40’s sake.

     And he said to Him, Oh Lord, don’t be angry, and I will speak: Perhaps 30 are found there. And He said, I will not do it if I find 30 there. 

     And he said, Behold now, I have taken on myself to speak to the Lord: Perhaps 20 are found there. 

     And He said, I will not destroy it for 20's sake.

     And he said, Oh Lord, don’t be angry, and I will speak just this once: Perhaps 10 are found there. And He said, I will not destroy it for 10's sake.

     And the LORD left when He finished speaking with Abraham: and Abraham returned to his place. 

 

Genesis 19

 

     Two angels came to Sodom at evening; and Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom: and Lot, seeing them, got up to meet them and bowed his face to the ground. And he said, Behold now, my lords, please turn in to your servant's house, and stay all night, and wash your feet, and rise early, and go your way. And they said, No; we will stay in the street.

     With much urging they turned in to him, and entered his house and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

     But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both old and young, all the people from every quarter. And they called to Lot, saying, Where are the men who came in to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.

     And Lot went out at the door to them, and shut the door after him, And said, please brothers, do not act evilly. Behold now, I have two daughters that have not known man (virgins); please let me bring them out to you and do to them as you see fit: only do nothing to these men, for this reason they came they under the shadow of my roof.

    They said, Stand back! This one came to visit and now he will govern us? We will do worse to you than to them. And they pushed hard on the man, Lot, and came to break the door.

     But the men (the angels) put out their hand, and pulled Lot to them, into the house and shut to the door. And they struck the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

     And the men said to Lot, Who do you still have here? son in law, and your sons, and your daughters, and whoever you have in the city, bring them out of this place: for we will destroy this place, because the outcry of them has grown great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD has sent us to destroy it. 

     And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons in law, who married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed that he was joking to his sons in law.

     And when the dawn arose, then the angels hurried Lot, saying, Get up, take your wife, and your two daughters, that are here; so you not be swept away in the perversity of the city. And while he lingered, the men laid hold on his hand, and on the hand of his wife, and on the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful to him: and they brought him out and set him outside the city.

     And as they led him out, he said, Escape for your life; do not look behind you, or stay in all the plain; escape to the mountain, so you won’t be consumed.

     And Lot said to them, Oh no, my Lord: See now, your servant has found grace in your sight, and you magnified your mercy shown to me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, for some evil will overtake me, and I’ll die. See, this city is near to flee to, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape there, (is it not a little one?) and my soul will live.

     And he said to him, See, I have accepted you concerning this thing and will not overthrow this city, for which you have spoken. Hurry! Escape there; for I cannot do anything until you have come there. Therefore, the name of the city was called Zoar (insignificance).

     The sun had risen on the earth when Lot entered Zoar. Then the LORD rained on Sodom and on Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven. And He overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all those dwelling of the cities, and what grew on the ground.

     But his wife looked back from behind him (Lot), and she became a pillar of salt.

     And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD. And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and saw the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

     And when God destroyed the cities of the plain, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities where Lot dwelt.

     And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his 2 daughters with him; for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his 2 daughters.

     And the firstborn said to the younger, Our father is old, and there is no man in the earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth: Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

     And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in and lay with her father; and he didn’t know when she lay down, or when she arose.

     And the next day the firstborn said to the younger, Behold, I lay last night with my father: let us make him drink wine tonight also; and you go in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down, or when she arose.

     So both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. And the firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab (of his father): he is the father of the Moabites to this day. And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Benammi (son of my people): he is the father of the children of Ammon to this day. 

 

Genesis 20

 

     And Abraham moved from there toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and stayed in Gerar. And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

     But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, you are a dead man, for the woman you have taken is married to a husband. 

     But Abimelech had not come near her, and he said, Lord, will you slay a righteous nation? Didn’t he say to me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the honor of my heart and purity of my hands I have done this.

     And God said to him in a dream, Yes, I know that you did this in the honor of your heart; for I also withheld you from sinning against Me: for that reason I didn't allow you to touch her. Now return the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you will live: and if you do not return her, know that you will surely die, you, and all that are yours.

     So, Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears, and the men were terrified. 

     Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, What have you done to us? How have I offended you, that you brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done. And Abimelech said to Abraham, What did you see, that you have done this thing?

     And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will kill me for my wife's sake. She really is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. And when God caused me to wander from my father's house, I said to her, This is your kindness that you will show me; every place where we come, say of me, He is my brother.

     And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and women servants, and gave them to Abraham, and returned to him Sarah his wife.

     And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before you: dwell where it pleases you.

     And to Sarah he said, Behold, I have given your brother 1,000 pieces of silver: behold, it is to you a covering of the eyes to all that are with you, and with all others: with it she was justified (a gift of apology).

     So Abraham prayed to God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they gave birth. For the LORD had completely closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah Abraham's wife. 

Genesis 21

 

    And the LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did to Sarah as He had spoken. For Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. And Abraham called the name of his son that was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac (laughter).

    And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him. And Abraham was 100 years old, when his son Isaac was born to him.

    And Sarah said, God has made me laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me. And she said, Who would have said to Abraham, that Sarah would nurse children? for I have born him a son in his old age.

    And the child grew and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned.

    And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born to Abraham, mocking. And she said to Abraham, Drive away this maidservant and her son: for the son of this maidservant will not be heir with my son, with Isaac.

    And the thing was very grievous (tremble) in Abraham's sight because of his son. And God said to Abraham, Don’t let this be grievous in your sight because of the lad, and because of the maidservant; in all that Sarah has said to you, hear her voice; for in Isaac your seed will be called.

    And also I will make the son of the maidservant a nation, because he is your seed. 

    And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she left and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.

    And the water was gone in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. And she went and sat opposite him away, about a bowshot: for she said, Don’t let me see the death of the child. And she sat opposite him, and lifted her voice, and wept.

    And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of the heavens, and said to her, Hagar? Don’t be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Get up, lift up the boy, and strengthen him in your hand; for I will make him a great nation.

    And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the boy a drink.

    And God was with the lad; and he grew up, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran: and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

    At that time Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his army spoke to Abraham, saying, God is with you in all that you do: So now swear to me here by God that you will not lie to me, and to my son, and to my heir: but according to the kindness that I have done to you, do to me, and to the land where you have stayed.

    And Abraham said, I will swear.And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, that Abimelech's servants had violently taken away.

    And Abimelech said, I do not know who did this: you didn’t tell me, I have not heard, except today. And Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech; and both of them made a covenant. And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.

     And Abimelech said to Abraham, What do these seven ewe lambs mean that you have set by themselves?

    And he said, You will take these seven ewe lambs to be a witness to me, that I dug this well. For this reason that place is called Beersheba; because there both of them swore. They made a covenant at Beersheba.

    Then Abimelech got up, and Phichol, the chief captain of his army, and they returned into the land of the Philistines.

    And Abraham planted a tamarisk (evergreen, can grow 60 ft) in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the eternal God.

    And Abraham remained in the Philistines' land many days.

 

Genesis 22

 

     After these things, God tested Abraham, and said to him, Abraham: and he said, I am here. 

     And He said, Take now your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you.

     And Abraham got up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and split the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went to the place that God had told him.

     Then on the 3rd day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place far off. And Abraham said to his young men, Sit here with the ass; and I and the boy will go there and worship, and we will return to you.

     And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went together.

     And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, I am here, my son. And he said, See the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

     And Abraham said, My son, God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. And they came to the place where God had told him; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar on the wood. And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to kill his son.

     And the angel of the LORD called to him out of the heavens and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, I am here.

     And he said, Don’t lay your hand on the boy, or do anything to him: for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son from Me.

     And Abraham lifted his eyes, and looked and saw a ram behind him caught by his horns in a thicket: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son.

     And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh (Jehovah sees): so that it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it will be seen. (as we see that God didn’t ‘spare His own Son but delivered Him up for us all.’)

     And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time, out of the heavens and said, By Myself have I sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son: In blessing I will bless you, and in making great I will make your seed great as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand  on the seashore; and your seed will own the gate of his enemies.

     And in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed; because you have heard My voice. (‘faith comes by hearing the word of God’ Romans 10:17)

     So Abraham returned to his young men, and they got up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

     And after these things Abraham was told, Behold, Milcah, she has also born children to your brother Nahor; Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.

     And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother. And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she also bare Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.

 

 

Genesis 23

 

     And Sarah was 127 years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah. And Sarah died in Kirjatharba; that’s Hebron (communion) in the land of Canaan: and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.

     And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, I am a foreigner and a visitor with you: give me a possession of a burying place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.

     And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him, Hear us, my lord: you are a prince of God among us: in the best of our tombs bury your dead; none of us will withhold from you his tomb, that you may bury your dead.

     And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, to the children of Heth. And he spoke with them, saying, If it is your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight; hear me, and ask for me of Ephron the son of Zohar, To give me the cave of Machpelah (double portion), that he has in the end of his field; he will give it me for its full worth, for a possession of a burying place among you.

     And Ephron dwelt among the children of Heth: and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the ears of the children of Heth, all that went in at the gate of his city, saying, No my lord, hear me: I give you the field and the cave in it, I give it to you; in the presence of the sons of my people I give it to you: bury your dead.

     And Abraham bowed himself before the people of the land. And he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land saying, If only you would hear me: I will give you money for the field; take it from me, and I will bury my dead there.

     And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him, my lord, listen to me: the land is worth 400 shekels of silver; what is that between me and you? bury your dead.

     And Abraham heard Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver he had said in the hearing of the sons of Heth, 400 shekels of silver, current money with the merchant. And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah before Mamre, the field, and the cave in it and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders around it, were certified to Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city.

     And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. And the field, and the cave in it, were certified to Abraham for a possession of a burying place by the sons of Heth. 

Genesis 24

 

     And Abraham was old, far gone in days: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. And Abraham said to his oldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Please put your hand under my thigh: And I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: but go to my country, and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac.

     And the servant said to him, What if the woman is not willing to follow me to this land: do I need to bring your son again to the land you came from?

     And Abraham said to him, Be careful not to take my son there again. The LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father's house, and from the land of my relatives, and who spoke to me, and that swore to me, saying, To your seed I will give this land; He will send His angel before you, and you will take a wife for my son from there. And if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be clear from my oath: only do not bring my son there again.

     And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning that matter. And the servant took ten camels of his master’s camels and left; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he got up and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. 

     And he made his camels kneel down outside the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, the time that women go out to draw water.

     And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, Please, may I see her face before me this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 

     Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. The young lady to whom I say, Let down your pitcher, please, that I may drink; and she says, Drink, and I will give your camels to drink also: let her be the one that You have designed for Your servant Isaac; and I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.

     And before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah came, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher on her shoulder. And the young lady was very beautiful to look at, a virgin, no man had known her: and she went down to the fountain, and filled her pitcher, and came up.

     And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher. And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hurried, and let down her pitcher on her hand, and gave him a drink. And when she had finished giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking. And she hurried, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.

     And the man gazing at her held his peace, to know whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not. And it happened, as the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a golden ring weighing half a shekel, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold; And said, Whose daughter are you? Please tell me: is there room in your father's house for us to stay?

     And she said to him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, that she bore to Nahor. She said to him, We have both straw and fodder enough, and room to stay.

     And the man bowed down his head and worshipped the LORD. And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken my master of His faithfulness and His truth: I, being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master's brothers.

     And the young lady ran and told them of her mother's house these things. And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out to the man, to the fountain. And when he saw the ring and bracelets on his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, The man said this to me; that he came to the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the fountain.

     And he said, Come in, you blessed of the LORD; why are you standing outside? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels. And the man came into the house: and he unloaded his camels, and gave straw and fodder for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men's feet that were with him.

     And food was set before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have spoken my message. And he said, Speak on. And he said, I am Abraham's servant. And the LORD has blessed my master greatly; and he has become great: and He has given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses.

     And Sarah my master's wife bore a son to my master when she was old: and to him he given all that he has. And my master made me swear, saying, Do not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell: But go to my father's house, and to my family, and take a wife for my son.

     And I said to my master, What if the woman will not follow me? And he said to me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send His angel with you, and prosper your way; and you will take a wife for my son of my relatives, and of my father's house:

     Then you will be clear from this my oath, when you come to my family; and if they do not give you one, you will be clear from my oath.

     And I came today to the fountain, and said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now You prosper my way which I go: Behold, I stand by the fountain of water; and when the virgin comes to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, please, a little water to drink from your pitcher; And she says to me, Both you drink, and I will also draw for your camels, may she be the ishah (bone of my bone flesh of my flesh) the LORD has appointed for my master's son.

     And before I had finished speaking in My heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down to the fountain and drew water: and I said to her, Let me drink, please.

     And she hurried, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder and said, Drink, and I will also give your camels drink: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also.

     And I asked her and said, Whose daughter are you? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him: and I put the ring on her nostril, and the bracelets on her hands.

     And I bowed my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take my master's brother's daughter to his son.

     And now if you are going to do kindness and truth with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.

     Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing comes from the LORD: we cannot speak to you bad or good. Behold, Rebekah is before you, take her, and go. And let her be your master's son's wife, as the LORD has spoken.

     And when Abraham's servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the earth, to the Lord, and worshipped.     And the servant brought out jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah: he also gave to her brother and to her mother precious things.

     And they ate and drank, he and the men that were with him, and passed night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away to my master. 

     And her brother and her mother said, Let the girl stay with us a few days, at least ten; after that she will go.

     And he said to them, Don’t delay me, seeing the LORD has prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.

     And they said, We will call the girl, and ask her. And they called Rebekah, and said to her, Will you go with this man? And she said, I will go.

     And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men. And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, You are our sister, be the mother of thousands of millions, and let your seed possess the gate (rule over) of those who hate them.

     And Rebekah got up, and her maidens, and they rode on the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah and went his way.

     And Isaac came from the way of the well of the Living One seeing me; for he dwelt in the south country.

     And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening: and he lifted his eyes, and saw, and behold, the camels were coming.

     And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she fell off the camel. For she had said to the servant, What man is this that walks in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: so, she took a veil and covered herself.

     And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. 

Genesis 25

   

    Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah (incense). And she bore him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.

    And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.

    And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.

    And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac. But to the sons of the concubines (paramour), which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he still lived, eastward, to the east country.

    And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, 175 years. Then Abraham expired, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.

    And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre; The field that Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth: there Abraham was buried, and Sarah his wife.

    And after the death of Abraham God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well of the Living One seeing me.

    Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bore to Abraham: these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, and Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles (encampments); 12 princes according to their nations.

    And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, 137 years: and he expired and died; and was gathered to his people. And they dwelt from Havilah to Shur, that is before Egypt, as you go toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brothers.

    And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begat Isaac. And Isaac was 40 years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.

    And Isaac prayed to the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

    And the sons fought together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I like this? And she went to seek the LORD.

    And the LORD said to her, Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples will come from your body; and the one people will be stronger than the other people; and the older will serve the younger.

    And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. And the first came out red, all over like a hairy garment; and they called his name Esau (hairy). And after that his brother came out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob (supplanter): and Isaac was 60 years old when she bore them.

    And the boys grew: and Esau knew how to hunt, a man of the field; and Jacob was a perfect, complete man, dwelling in tents. (Jesus makes us complete-Colossians 2:10) He gives us His perfect life as a gift when we believe.)

    And Isaac loved Esau, because he ate of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

    And Jacob boiled food: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint. And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me with that same red soup; for I am faint: so his name was called Edom (red).

    And Jacob said, Sell me this day your birthright. And Esau said, Look, I’m about to die: and what good is this birthright to me? 

    And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he swore to him: and he sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and boiled lentils. And he ate and drank, and got up, and left: this is how Esau despised his birthright.

Genesis 26

 

     And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines to Gerar.

     And the LORD appeared to him, and said, Don’t go down into Egypt; dwell in the land I will tell you of. Stay in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you; for to you, and to your seed, I will give all these countries, and I will establish the oath I swore to Abraham your father. And I will make your seed increase as the stars of heaven, and will give to your seed all these countries; and in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed because Abraham heard My voice, and kept My charge (guard, watch, preserve), My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.

     And Isaac dwelt in Gerar. And the men of the place asked him about his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife, he said, so the men of the place won’t kill me for Rebekah, because she was beautiful to look at.

     And when he had been there a long time, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, looked out a window, and saw Isaac caressing Rebekah, his wife.

     And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Surely she is your wife: and you said, She is my sister? And Isaac said to him, Because I said, So I not be killed because of her. 

     And Abimelech said, What is this you have done to us? One of the people almost lay with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us.

     And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that touches this man or his wife will surely be put to death.

     Then Isaac sowed in that land and received in the same year 100 times: and the LORD blessed him. And the man kept growing greater, and progressed, and grew until he became very great: for he had livestock, of flocks and herds of all kinds, and many servants: and the Philistines envied him.

     All the wells that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines stopped them, and filled them with dirt. 

     And Abimelech said to Isaac, Go away from us; for you are much mightier (numerous) than we. And Isaac left there, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

     And Isaac dug again the wells of water, that they had dug in the days of Abraham, his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names the names by that his father had called them.

     And Isaac's servants dug in the torrent bed and found there a well of living water. And the herdsmen of Gerar strove with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.

     And they dug another well and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah (strife). And he moved from there and dug another well; and for that they didn't strive: and he called the name of it Rehoboth (wide place); and he said, For now the LORD has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.

     And he went up from there to Beersheba. And the LORD appeared to him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham your father. Don’t be afraid, for I am with you, and will bless you, and multiply your seed for My servant Abraham's sake.

     And he built an altar there, and called on the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants dug a well.

     Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his aide, and Phichol, the commander of his army.

     And Isaac said to them, Why have you come to me, seeing you hate me, and have sent me away from you?

    And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with you: and we said, Let there be now an oath between us, between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you that you will do us no harm, since we haven't touched you. We have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace: you are now the blessed of the LORD.

     And he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. And they rose up early in the morning and swore one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they left him in peace.

     And on the same day, Isaac's servants came and told him about the well they dug, and said to him, We have found water. And he called it Shebah (oath): therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.

     And Esau was 40 years old when he took a wife, Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite. They were a grief of mind to Isaac and to Rebekah.

Genesis 27

 

    When Isaac was old and his eyes were dim, so that he couldn't see, he called Esau his oldest son, and said to him, My son: and he said to him, Behold, here am I. And he said, Look, now I am old, I do not know the day of my death. Now please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field, and take me some game. And make me savory food that I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless you before I die.

    And Rebekah heard when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for game and bring it.

    And Rebekah spoke to Jacob, her son, saying, Look, I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying, Bring me game, and make me savory food, that I may eat, and bless you before the LORD before my death.

   Now my son, obey my voice according to what I command you. Go to the flock, and bring me two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savory food for your father, like he loves: And you will bring it to your father, that he may eat, and that he may bless you before his death.

   And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man. Perhaps my father will feel me and see me as a deceiver; and I will bring a curse on me, and not a blessing.

    And his mother said to him, Your curse be on me, my son: only obey my voice, and go bring them to me. And he went, and took, and brought them to his mother: and his mother made savory food, as his father loved.

     And Rebekah took costly clothes of her oldest son Esau, that were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands, and on the smooth of his neck. And she gave the savory food and bread she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.

    And he came to his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here I am; who are you, my son? And Jacob said to his father, I am Esau your firstborn; I have done as you said: Please get up, sit and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.

    And Isaac said to his son, How did you find it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD your God brought it to me. (This is an example of ‘Don’t use the Lord’s name in vain. Commandment # 3)

    And Isaac said to Jacob, Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.And Jacob went near Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau. And he did not know him, because his hands were hairy, like his brother Esau's hands: so he blessed him.

    And he said, Are you truly my son Esau? And he said, I am. And he said, Bring to me, and I will eat my son's game, that my soul may bless you. And he brought it to him, and he ate: and he brought him wine, and he drank. 

    And his father Isaac said to him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son. And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his clothes, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed.

     May God give you of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and much grain and wine. Let people serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers and let your mother's sons bow down to you. Cursed be every one that curses you, and blessed is he that blesses you.

    And when Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had barely left the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting. And he also made savory food, and brought it to his father, and said to his father, Let my father rise, and eat of his son's game, that your soul may bless me.

    And Isaac his father said to him, Who are you? And he said, I am your son, your firstborn Esau.

    And Isaac was terrified with a very great terror and said, Who? Where is he that hunted game, and brought it me, and I ate of all before you came, and have blessed him? Yes, and he will be blessed.

    And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and very bitter cry, and said to his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.

    And he said, Your brother came deceitfully, and has taken away your blessing.

    And he said, That’s why he’s called Jacob. He defrauded me twice: he took away my birthright; and see, now he has taken away my blessing. And he said, Have you not reserved a blessing for me?

    And Isaac answered and said to Esau, Behold, I have made him your lord, and I have given all his brothers to him for servants; and with grain and wine have I sustained him: and what can I now do to you, my son?

    And Esau said to his father, Is not one blessing to you, my father? Bless me also, O my father. And Esau lifted his voice and wept.

    And Isaac his father answered and said to him, Behold, your dwelling will be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above; You will live by your sword, and serve your brother; and when you fight, you will break his yoke off your neck.

    And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing his father had blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are near; then will I kill my brother Jacob.

     And Rebekah was told these words of Esau her older son: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, Behold, your brother Esau, comforts himself, planning to kill you.

     Now, my son, obey my voice; and rise, flee to Laban my brother to Haran and stay with him a few days, until your brother's fury turns away: until your brother's anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send, and take you from there: why should I be bereaved of you both in one day?

     And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, these daughters of the land, what is will my life to me?

Genesis 28

 

     And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and commanded him, and said to him, Don’t take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. Get up, go to Padanaram, to the house of Bethuel your grandfather; and take a wife from there of the daughters of Laban your uncle.

     And God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a multitude of people. And give you the blessing of Abraham, to you, and to your seed with you; that you may inherit the land where you are a foreigner, that God gave to Abraham. 

     And Isaac sent Jacob away: and he went to Padanaram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.

    When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take a wife from there; and that as he blessed him, he commanded him, saying, Don’t take a wife of the daughters of Canaan; And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and went to Padanaram.

     And Esau, seeing that the daughters of Canaan didn’t please Isaac his father, Esau went to Ishmael and took to the wives he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

    And Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. And he came to a certain place, and stayed there all night, because the sun had set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them at his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.

     And he dreamed, and saw a stairway set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

     And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac: the land where you are lying, I will give it to you, and to your seed. And your seed will be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth will be blessed.

     And behold, I am with you, and will guard you in all places you go, and will bring you again into this land; for I will not leave you, until I have done what I have said to you.

     And Jacob woke out of his sleep and said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I didn’t know it.

     And he was afraid, and said, How awesome is this place! This is none other but the house of God, and this is the door to the heavens.

     And Jacob rose up early in the morning and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on the top of it. And he called the name of that place Bethel (house of God): but the name of that city was called Luz (light) at first.

     And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will guard me in this way that I go, and will give me food to eat, and clothing to put on, so that I return to my father's house in peace; then the LORD will be my God: And this stone, that I have set for a pillar, will be God's house: and of all that You give me, the tenth I will tithe to you.

Genesis 29

 

     Jacob went on his journey and came into the land of the people of the east. And he looked, and saw a well in the field, and there were 3 flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was on the well's mouth. And there all the flocks were gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone on the well's mouth in its place.

    And Jacob said to them, My brothers, Where are you from? And they said, We are from Haran. And he said, Do you know Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him.

     And he said to them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and look, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep. 

     Jacob said, It’s still high day. Isn’t it time to gather the cattle, water the sheep, and go feed them.

     They said, We can’t until all the flocks are gathered and they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.

     And as he was speaking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep: for she fed them.

     And when Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Laban, his uncle, and the sheep of Laban his uncle, Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban, his uncle.

     And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted his voice, and wept. And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son: and she ran and told her father.

     And when Laban heard the news of Jacob, his nephew, he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.

     And Laban said to him, Surely you are bone and my flesh. And he stayed with him a month of days.

     And Laban said to Jacob, Because you are my brother, should you serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?

     And Laban had two daughters: the name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

     Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful of form and appearance. And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve you 7 years for Rachel your younger daughter.

     And Laban said, It is better that I give her to you, than to another man: stay with me.

     And Jacob served 7 years for Rachel; and they seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had for her.

     And Jacob said to Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.

     And Laban gathered all the men of the place and made a feast. And in the evening, he took his daughter Leah and brought her to him; and he went in to her.

     And Laban gave his daughter Leah, Zilpah, his maid, for a handmaid. And in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What have done to me? Didn’t I serve you for Rachel? Why have you tricked me? 

     And Laban said, It must not be done that way in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn. Fulfill her week, and we will give you this one also for the service you will serve with me seven more years.

     And Jacob did this and fulfilled her (bridal) week: and then he gave him Rachel his daughter as wife also.

     And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah, his handmaid, to be her maid. And he went into Rachel, and he loved Rachel more than Leah, and served with him another seven other years.

     And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, He opened her womb: but Rachel was barren. And Leah conceived, and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD has looked on my affliction; now my husband will love me.

     And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said, Because the LORD has heard that I was hated, He has given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.

     And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said, Now, this time will my husband be joined to me, because I have born him 3 sons: so his name was called Levi. 

     And she conceived again, and bore a son: and she said, Now I will praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and she stopped bearing. 

 

Genesis 30

 

     And when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said to Jacob, Give me children, or I will die.

     And Jacob's anger burned against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God's place, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?

     And she said, Behold, my maid Bilhah (troubled), go into her; and she will bear on my knees, that I may also have children by her. And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid as wife: and Jacob went in to her.

     And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son. And Rachel said, God has pleaded for me, and heard my voice, and has given me a son: so, she called his name Dan. 

     And Bilhah Rachel's maid conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. And Rachel said, With great wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali.

     When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpah, her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife.

     And Zilpah Leah's maid bore Jacob a son. And Leah said, Good fortune comes: and she called his name Gad. And Zilpah Leah's maid bore Jacob a second son.

     And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.

     And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest and found mandrakes (love-apples) in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. 

     Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me of your son's mandrakes. 

     And she said to her, Is it a small matter that you have taken my husband? And would you take away my son's mandrakes also? 

     And Rachel said, He will lie with you tonight for your son's mandrakes. 

     And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, You must come in to me; for truly I have hired you with my son's mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.

     And God listened to Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob the 5th son. And Leah said, God has given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and she called his name Issachar (there is recompence).

     And Leah conceived again, and bore Jacob the 6th son. And Leah said, God has endued me with a good present; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him 6 sons: and she called his name Zebulun (exalted).

     And afterwards she bore a daughter and called her name Dinah (judgment).

     And God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her, and opened her womb. And she conceived, and bore a son; and said, God has taken away my reproach (scorn); And she called his name Joseph (Jehovah has added); and said, The LORD will add to me another son.

     And when Rachel had born Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, Send me away, that I may go to my own place, and to my country. Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served you, and let me go: for you know my service that I served you.

     And Laban said to him, If I have found favor in your eyes, stay: for I have seen omens and the LORD has blessed me for your sake.

     And he said, Set your wages, and I will give it.

     And he said to him, You know how I have served you, and how your livestock was with me. You had little before I came, and now it is increased to a multitude; and the LORD has blessed you since my coming: now when will I provide for my own house also? 

     And he said, What shall I give you? 

     And Jacob said, You will not give me anything: but do this for me, I will feed and keep your flock again. I will pass through all your flock today, removing from there all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the dark color (brown or black) cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: these will be my wages.

     So my righteousness will answer for me in time to come, when you come about my wages before your face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and black/brown among the sheep, that will be counted stolen with me.

     And Laban said, Yes, truly, let it be as you say. And he removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the black among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.

     And he set three days' journey (60 miles) between himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.

     And Jacob took rods of green poplar, and from the hazel and chesnut tree; and peeled white streaks in them, and made the white appear that was in the rods. And he set the rods that he had peeled before the flocks in the hollows in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they would conceive when they came to drink.

     And the flocks conceived before the rods, and produced cattle ringstraked, speckled, and spotted.

     And Jacob separated the lambs and set the faces of the flocks toward the ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves; and didn’t put them with Laban's cattle.

     And whenever the stronger cattle were in heat, Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the hollows, that they might conceive among the rods. But when the cattle were weak, he didn’t put them in: so, the feebler were Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's.

     And the man increased exceedingly, and had many cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses.

 

 

     

 

Genesis 31

 

     And Jacob heard the words of Laban's sons saying, Jacob has taken away all that was our father's; and from what was our father's he has gotten all this abundance.

     And Jacob saw the face of Laban, it was not toward him as before.

     And the LORD said to Jacob, Return to the land of your fathers, and to your family; and I will be with you.

     And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field to his flock, and said to them, I see your father's face that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father has been with me. And you know that with all my power I have served your father. And your father has deceived me and changed my wages 10 times; but God did not allow him to hurt me.

     If he said, The speckled will be your wages; then all the livestock birthed speckled: and if he said, The ringstraked will be your wages; then all the livestock birthed ringstraked. 

     By this God has taken away the livestock of your father and given them to me. (Two cheaters, learning that God is a God of infinite abundance and no one needs to cheat.)

     (I, the Lord, search the heart, I correct the reins-thoughts that guide the way we go, to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. Jeremiah 17:10

     Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for Your eyes are open on all the ways of the sons of men: to give everyone according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. Jeremiah 32:17-19

     At the time that the livestock were in heat, I lifted my eyes, and saw in a dream, and behold, the rams that leaped on the sheep were ringstraked, speckled, and dappled.

     And the angel of God spoke to me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here I am.

     And he said, Now lift your eyes, and see, all the rams that leap on the livestock are ringstraked, speckled, and dappled: for I have seen all that Laban does to you.

     I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar, and where you vowed a vow to Me: now get up, go from this land, and return to the land of your family. And I will be with you.

     And Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, Is there still any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house? Are we not counted strangers to him? for he sold us and has quite devoured our money. For all the riches God has taken from our father, that is ours, and our children's: now then, whatever God has said to you, do.

     Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives on camels, and he led away all his livestock, and all his goods he had gathered, the livestock of his possessions, that he had gathered in Padanaram, to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.

     And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the idols that were her father's. 

     And Jacob stole the heart of Laban the Syrian, in that he did not tell him that he was fleeing.

     So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward mount Gilead. And Laban was told on the 3rd day that Jacob had fled. And he took his brothers with him and chased after him 7 days' journey; and they overtook him in mount Gilead.

     And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said to him, Guard what you say. Don’t speak to Jacob either good or bad. Then Laban overtook Jacob. 

     Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and Laban with his brothers pitched in the mount of Gilead. And Laban said to Jacob, What have you done, that you have deceived my heart, and taken my daughters like captives of the sword? Why did you hide your flight, and steal away from me; and not tell me, so that I might have sent you away with rejoicing, and with songs, with tambourine, and with harp? You did not allow me to kiss my sons and my daughters? You have done foolishly.

It is in my power to hurt you: but the God of your father spoke to me last night saying, Watch out not to speak to Jacob either good or bad. 

     And now, though you need to go, because you greatly long for your father's house, but why have you stolen my gods?

     And Jacob answered and said to Laban, Because I was afraid: for I said you might take your daughters from me by force. With whomever you find your gods, don't let him live: before our brothers see for yourself if I have anything that is yours, and take it. For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.

     And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the two maidservants' tents; but he did not find them. Then went he out of Leah's tent and entered Rachel's tent. Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel's furniture, and sat on them. And Laban searched all the tent, but did not find them.

     And she said to her father, Do not be angry my lord that I cannot rise up before you; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched but did not find the images.

     And Jacob was furious, and argued with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that you have so hotly pursued me? You searched all my stuff, what did you find of all your belongings? Set it here before my brothers and your brothers, let them decide between us. 20 years I have been with you; your ewes and she goats have not miscarried, and I have not eaten the rams of your flock. I did not bring to you what was torn by beasts; I bore the loss of it; you required it of me, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.

    In the day I was consumed by drought, and by frost at night; my sleep fled from my eyes. Now I have been in your house 20 years; I served you 14 years for your 2 daughters, and 6 years for your livestock: and you changed my wages 10 times.

     Unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely you would have sent me away now empty. 

     God has seen my affliction and the work of my hands and rebuked you last night.

     And Laban answered and said to Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these livestock are my livestock, and all that you see is mine: and what can I do this day to these my daughters, or to their children which they have born?

     So come now, let us make a covenant, I and you; and let it be for a witness between me and you.

     And Jacob took a stone and set it up for a pillar.

     And Jacob said to his brothers, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made a heap: and they ate there on the heap.

     And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha (witness heap): but Jacob called it Galeed (witness heap).

     And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and you this day. So, the name of it was called Galeed; And Mizpah (watchtower); for he said, The LORD watch between me and you, when we are absent from one another.

     If you will not afflict (harm) my daughters, and not take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness between me and you. And Laban said to Jacob, See this heap, and this pillar, I have set between me and you. This heap is witness, and this pillar is witness, that I will not pass over this heap to you, and you will not pass over this heap and this pillar to me, for harm.

     The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us. And Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.

     Then Jacob offered sacrifice on the mount and called his brothers to eat food: and they ate and stayed all night in the mountain. And early in the morning Laban got up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban left, and returned to his place.

Genesis 32

 

     And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. And when Jacob saw them he said, This is God's camp: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim (two camps).

     And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother to the land of Seir, the country of Edom. And he commanded them, saying, Say this to my lord Esau; your servant Jacob says, I have stayed with Laban, stayed there until now: and I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and women servants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in your sight.

     And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and 400 men with him. Then Jacob was afraid, terrified; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two camps, and said, If Esau comes to the one camp, and strikes it, then the other camp that is left will escape.

     And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD who said to me, Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will deal well with you, I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, that You have shown to Your servant; for with my staff I crossed over this Jordan; and now I have become two camps.

     Save me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, that he will come and attack me, and the mother with the children.

     And You said, I will surely do you good, and make your seed as the sand of the sea, that cannot be counted for multitude.

     And he stayed there that same night; and took of what came to his hand a gift for Esau his brother: 200 she goats, 20 he goats, 200 ewes, and 20 rams, 30 milk camels with their colts, 40 heifers and 10 bulls, 20 she asses and 10 foals.

     And he gave them into the hand of his servants, every herd by themselves; and said to his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space between herd and herd.

     And he commanded the one in front, saying, When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, Whose are you? and where are you going? and whose are these before you? Then you say, They are your servant Jacob's; it is a gift sent to my lord Esau: and, also he is behind us.

     And he commanded the second, and the third to say the same thing, and all that followed the droves, saying, Tell Esau this when you find him. And say, Your servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the gift that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.

    So the gift went before him: and himself stayed that night in the camp. And he got up that night, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok. And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over all that he had.

     And Jacob was left alone; and a Man here wrestled a with him until the breaking of the day. And when He saw that He didn't prevail against him, He touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as He wrestled with him.

     And he said, Let me go, for the day breaks. And he said, I will not let You go, unless You bless me.

     And he said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob.

     And he said, Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince you have power with God and with men, and have prevailed.

     And Jacob asked, Tell me Your name. 

     And he said, Why do you ask My name? And He blessed him there.

     And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to Face, and my life is preserved.

     And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he limped on his thigh. Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat of the sinew that shrank, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day: because He touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank. 

Genesis 33

 

     And Jacob lifted his eyes, and looked, and saw Esau coming, and with him 400 men. And he divided the children to Leah, and to Rachel, and to the 2 handmaids.

And he put the handmaids and their children in front, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph behind.

     And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground 7 times, until he came near his brother.

     And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.

     And he lifted his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with you? And he said, The children God has graciously given your servant. Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves. And Leah came near with her children, and bowed themselves: and after Joseph came near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.

     And he said, What do you mean by all these flocks I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.

     And Esau said, I have much, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.

     And Jacob said, No, take my blessing. If I have found grace in your sight, then receive my gift at my hand: for I have seen your face, as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me. Take my blessing that is brought to you because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have all. And he urged him, and he took it. (He that overcomes will inherit all things and I will be his God and he will be My son. Revelation 21:7)

     And he said, Let’s take our journey, let’s go, and I will go before you. The Lord

     And he said to him, My lord knows that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with me are young: if men overdrive them one day, all the flock will die. My lord, pass over ahead of his servant: and I will lead gently, as the animals and children with me are able to endure until I come to my lord to Seir.

     And Esau said, Let me leave some of the people with you. And he said, That’s not needed. Let me find grace in the sight of my lord. So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.

     And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built a house, and made booths for his livestock: so, the name of the place is called Succoth (booths).

     And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city. And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for 100 pieces of money.

     And he set up an altar there and called it Elelohe-Israel (the mighty God of Israel).

Genesis 34

 

     And Dinah the daughter of Leah, that she bore to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. And when Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her. And his soul clung to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young lady, and spoke kindly to the young lady. And Shechem said to his father Hamor saying, Get me this young lady for a wife.

     Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter: now his sons were with his livestock in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they came.

     And Hamor, the father of Shechem, went out to Jacob to speak with him.

     And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and furious, because he had done disgrace in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing should not be done.

     And Hamor spoke with them saying, The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter: I pray you give her him for a wife. And make marriages with us, and give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to you. And you will dwell with us: and the land will be before you; dwell and trade in it and get possessions in it.

     And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what you say to me I will give. Ask me whatever dowry and gift, and I will give as you say to me: but give me the young lady to wife.

     And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor, his father, deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister: They said to them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that is a reproach to us: but we will consent to you: If you will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised, then will we give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

     But if you will not listen to us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.

     And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem, Hamor's son. And the young man didn’t hesitate to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honorable than all the house of his father.

     And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city (where governing was done), and talked with the men of their city, saying, These men are at peace with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade in it; for the land is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.

     The only way the men will consent to dwell with us, to be one people, is if every male among us becomes circumcised, as they are circumcised. Will not their livestock and their property and every animal of theirs be ours? Let’s consent to them, and they will dwell with us.

 

     In Genesis 17 God made His covenant of faith with Abraham and circumcision was the sign. It is sacred, separating God's people from the people of the world. Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Don't touch the unclean thing, and I will receive you. 2 Corinthians 6:17

 

     And all that went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city. 

     And on the third day, when they were in pain, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each man took his sword, and came on the city safely, and killed all the males. And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and left.

     The sons of Jacob came on the slain, and looted the city, because they had defiled their sister. They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and what was in the city, and what was in the field, and all their wealth, and all their little ones, and they took their wives captive, and looted all that was in the house.

     And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, You have stirred up trouble for me and made me stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they will gather together against me, and kill me; and I will be destroyed, I and my house.

     And they said, Should he treat our sister like a harlot? 

 

 

Genesis 35

 

     And God said to Jacob, Get up, go to Bethel, and dwell there: and make an altar to God who appeared to you when you fled from the face of your brother Esau.

     Then Jacob said to his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the foreign gods that are among you, and cleanse yourselves, and change your clothes, and let’s get up and go to Bethel, and I will make there an altar to God who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way that I went.

     And they gave Jacob all the foreign gods that were in their hand, and all their earrings that were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak by Shechem.

     And they traveled: and the terror of God was on the cities that were around them, and they did not chase after the sons of Jacob.

     So Jacob came to Luz (light), which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel (house of God), he and all the people that were with him.

     And he built an altar there and called the place Elbethel (the God of the house of God): because God appeared to him there when he fled from the face of his brother.

     But Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak: and the name of it was called Allonbachuth (oak of weeping).

     And God appeared to Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram (field), and blessed him. And God said to him, Your name is Jacob: your name will not be called Jacob (cheater) any longer, but Israel (prince) will be your name: and He called his name Israel.

     And God said to him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a assembly of nations will be from you, and kings will come out of your loins; and the land I gave Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, and to your seed after you, I will give the land.

     And God went up from him in the place where He talked with him. And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel (house of God).

     And they traveled from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel began childbirth, and she had hard labor. When she was in hard labor, the midwife said to her, Don’t be afraid; you will have this son also. And as her soul was departing, (for she died) she called his name Benoni (son of my sorrow): but his father called him Benjamin (son of the right hand).

     And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. And Jacob set a pillar on her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day.

     And Israel traveled and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar (tower of the flock). When Israel dwelt in that land, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard it. 

     Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: The sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun:

      The sons of Rachel; Joseph, and Benjamin:

      And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid; Dan, and Naphtali:

      And the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid; Gad, and Asher: these are the sons of Jacob, that were born to him in Padanaram.

     And Jacob came to Isaac his father at Mamre, to the city of Arbah, that is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac stayed.

     And the days of Isaac were 180 years.

     And Isaac expired, and died, and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him. 

 

Genesis 36

 

     Now these are the generations (birth histories) of Esau, who is Edom. Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite; And Bashemath Ishmael's daughter, sister of Nebajoth.

     And Adah bore to Esau Eliphaz; and Bashemath bore Reuel; And Aholibamah bore Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah: these are the sons of Esau, that were born to him in the land of Canaan.

     And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his livestock, and all his animals, and all his property that he had gained in the land of Canaan; and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob. For their riches were too much to dwell together; and the land where they were foreigners could not bear them because of their cattle (needed more grazing land).

     So Esau dwelt in mount Seir: Esau is Edom. And these are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in mount Seir: These are the names of Esau's sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau.

     And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz.

     And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau's son; and she bore to Eliphaz Amalek: these were the sons of Adah Esau's wife.

     And these are the sons of Reuel; Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah: these were the sons of Bashemath Esau's wife.

    And these were the sons of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon, Esau's wife: and she bore to Esau Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah.

     These were chiefs of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the firstborn son of Esau; chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, chief Kenaz, chief Korah, chief Gatam, and chief Amalek: these are the chiefs that came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these were the sons of Adah.

     And these are the sons of Reuel Esau's son; chief Nahath, chief Zerah, chief Shammah, chief Mizzah: these are the chiefs that came of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Bashemath Esau's wife.

     And these are the sons of Aholibamah Esau's wife; chief Jeush, chief Jaalam, chief Korah: these were the chiefs that came of Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau's wife.

     These are the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and these are their chiefs (dukes, leaders).

     These are the sons of Seir the Horite, who inhabited the land; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah, and Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan: these are the chiefs of the Horites, the children of Seir in the land of Edom.

     And the children of Lotan were Hori and Hemam; and Lotan's sister was Timna. 

     And the children of Shobal were these; Alvan, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.

     And these are the children of Zibeon; both Ajah, and Anah: this was that Anah that found the mules in the wilderness, as he fed the asses of Zibeon his father.

     And the children of Anah were these; Dishon, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah.

     And these are the children of Dishon; Hemdan, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.

     The children of Ezer are these; Bilhan, and Zaavan, and Akan.

     The children of Dishan are these; Uz, and Aran.

     These are the chiefs that came from the Horites; chief Lotan, chief Shobal, chief Zibeon, chief Anah,

     Chief Dishon, chief Ezer, chief Dishan: these are the chiefs that came of Hori, among their chiefs in the land of Seir.

    And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before any king reigned over the children of Israel.

 

     All these were created by God, in His image, Who loves the world so much that He would send His Son to die for all their sins. John 3:16

     

     For promotion doesn’t come from the east, or from the west, or from the south. But God is the judge: He puts down one, and sets up another. Psalm 75:6,7

     

     Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. To Him that loves us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to God and his Father; to Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Revelation 1:5,6

     

     And Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom: and the name of his city was Dinhabah. And Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of Temani reigned in his place. And Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who struck Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his place: and the name of his city was Avith. And Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place. And Samlah died, and Saul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his place. And Saul died, and Baalhanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place. And Baalhanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his place: and the name of his city was Pau; and his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab. And these are the names of the chiefs that came of Esau, according to their families, after their places, by their names; chief Timnah, chief Alvah, chief Jetheth, Chief Aholibamah, chief Elah, chief Pinon, Chief Kenaz, chief Teman, chief Mibzar, Chief Magdiel, chief Iram: these are the chiefs of Edom, according to their dwellings in the land of their possession: he is Esau the father of the Edomites. 

Genesis 37

 

     And Jacob dwelt in the land where his father was a foreigner, in the land of Canaan. These are the generations of Jacob. 

     Joseph, being 17 years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought their father their report, an evil one.

     Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a long tunic (reaching to the hands and the feet, a sign of authority). And when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and couldn’t speak peaceably to him.

     And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers: and they hated him even more:

     And he said to them, Listen to this dream I have dreamed: we were binding sheaves in the middle of the field, and my sheaf rose and stood upright, and your sheaves stood around it and bowed to my sheaf.

     And his brothers said to him, will you reign over us? Really? You will reign over us? And they hated him more for his dreams, and for his words.

     And he dreamed another dream, and told it to his brothers and said, Behold, I have dreamed another dream: the sun and the moon and the eleven stars bowed to me.

     And he told it to his father and brothers, and his father rebuked him and said to him, What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to you to the ground?

     And his brothers envied him; but his father paid attention to the word.

     And his brothers went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.

     And Israel said to Joseph, Aren’t your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them. 

     And he said to him, Here I am. 

     And he said to him, Go, see the welfare of your brothers, and the welfare of the flocks; and bring me word again. So. he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

     A man found him wandering in the field: and the man asked him, What are you seeking?

     And he said, I seek my brothers: tell me, please where they pasture.

     And the man said, They left here; I heard them say, Let’s go toward Dothan. And Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.

     And when they saw him far off, before he came near them, they plotted against him to kill him. They said one to another, Look, this master of dreams comes.

Now come, let’s kill him, and throw him into one of the pits, and we will say, Some evil beast has eaten him: then let’s see what becomes of his dreams.

     And Reuben heard it, and saved him out of their hands; and said, Let’s not kill him. And Reuben said to them, Shed no blood, but throw him into this pit in the wilderness. Don’t lay a hand on him; that he might deliver him out of their hands, to return him to his father.

     And when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped Joseph out of his coat, his long coat reaching to the feet that was on him, and they took him and threw him into a pit: the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

     And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and saw a caravan of Ishmeelites coming from Gilead with their camels carrying spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry them down to Egypt. And Judah said to his brothers, What profit is it if we kill our brother, and cover his blood? Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be on him; for he is our brother; he is our  flesh. And his brothers listened to him.

     Then Midianites merchants passed, and they drew Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for 20 pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

     And Reuben returned to the pit; and Joseph was not in the pit; and he tore his clothes. And he returned to his brothers and said, The child is not; and I, where can I go?

     And they took Joseph's long coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the long coat in the blood, and they sent the long coat, and they brought it to their father and said, We found this: we don’t know now if it’s your son's coat or not.

    And he knew it and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast has eaten him; Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces. And Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many days. (first mention of loins in scripture is when God promised Abraham, ‘kings will come out of your loins’ Genesis 35:11), 

     And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, I will go down into the grave to my son mourning. His father wept for him.

     And the Midianites sold him into Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and chief of the executioners.

 

 

Genesis 38

 

     At that time Judah went down from his brothers, and turned to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah (means a noble family).

     And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah (wealth); and he took her and went into her. And she conceived and birthed a son; and he called his name Er (awake).

     And she conceived again and birthed a son; and she called his name Onan (strong). And she conceived and birthed a son; and called his name Shelah (a petition): and he was at Chezib (false) when she birthed him.

     And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar (palm tree).

     And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked (bad, evil) in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD killed him. 

 

     God has been at war with evil since the fall, in Eden, to ensure that His infinitely beautiful plan continue on. 'The thief came to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.' John 10:10

 

     And Judah said to Onan, Go into your brother's wife, and marry (levirate marriage) her, and raise up seed to your brother. And Onan knew that the seed would not be his; so when he went into his brother's wife, he spilled it on the ground and would not give seed to his brother.

    And the thing he did was evil in the sight of the LORD: He killed him also.

 

     Remember God’s instruction at creation, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. (with beings made in His image).

     

     Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter in law, Remain a widow at your father's house, until Shelah, my son, is grown: for he said, So he not also die as his brothers did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.  After many days the daughter of Shuah, Judah's wife, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. 

    And Tamar was told, saying, See, your father in law goes to Timnath to shear his sheep. And she took off her widow's garments, and covered herself with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as wife.

     When Judah saw her, he thought she was a harlot; for she had veiled her face. And he turned to her by the way, and said, Come, let me come in unto you; (for he didn’t know that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What will you give me, to come in to me?

     And he said, I will send you a kid of the goats from the flock. And she said, Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?

     And he said, What pledge shall I give you? And she said, Your signet ring, and your bracelets, and your staff that is in your hand. And he gave it her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him. And she got up, and left, and removed her veil from her face, and put on her widow’s robes.

     And Judah sent the kid of the goats by his friend’s hand, the Adullamite, to get back his pledge from the woman's hand: but he did not find her. Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the road? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.

     And he returned to Judah and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said that there was ‘no harlot in this place.’ 

     And Judah said, Let her take it so we not be shamed: look, I sent this kid, and you didn’t find her.

     After 3 months Judah was told, Tamar your daughter in law has committed adultery and also is with child by adultery. Judah said, Bring her and let her be burnt. 

     When she was brought she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, I am with child: and she said, Notice whose these are, the signet ring, and bracelets, and staff.

     Judah looked and said, She is more righteous than I because I did not give her to Shelah my son. And he knew her (wasn't intimate with) her again no more.

     And at the time for her to give birth, behold, twins were in her womb. And during the birth, one put out his hand: and the midwife tied a scarlet thread on his hand saying, This one came out first. And he drew back his hand, and behold, his brother came out: and she said, How did you burst forth? this breach be on you: so his name was called Pharez (breach, burst, gap). And afterward his brother came out that had the scarlet thread on his hand: and his name was called Zarah (rising). 

 

Genesis 39

     

     And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the chief of the executioners, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had brought him down there.

     And the LORD was with Joseph, and he got things done; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

     And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had, he put into his hand.

   And from the time he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had in the house, and in the field. And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew nothing about what he had, except the food he ate. And Joseph was of good form, and beautiful appearance.

     And after these things his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. But he refused, and said to his master's wife, See this, my master knows nothing that is with me in the house, and he has given all that he has to my hand. No one is greater in this house; and he has not withheld anything from me except you, because you are his wife: how could I do this great evil, and sin against God?

     As she spoke this to Joseph, day after day, he didn’t listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

     One day Joseph went into the house to do his work; and none of the men were in the house. She caught him by his robe, saying, Lie with me: and he left his robe in her hand, and fled, and got out. And when she saw that he had left his robe in her hand, and fled, she called to the men of her house, and said to them, See, he brought Hebrew into us to mock us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I screamed. And when he heard me scream, he left his robe with me and ran out.

     And she set his robe beside her, until his lord came home. And she said these same words to him, The Hebrew slave, you brought to us, came in to me to toy with me: And when I screamed, he left his left his robe with me, and ran out.

     When his master heard the words of his wife that she said to him, saying, This is what your servant did to me; his wrath burned.

     And Joseph's master seized him, and put him in the prison house, a place where the king's prisoners were imprisoned: and he was there in the prison house.

     But the LORD was with Joseph, and showed him goodness, (kindness, faithfulness,) and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 

     And the warden of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison, and whatever they did there, he was the doer of it. The warden of the prison didn’t oversee anything that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and what he did, the LORD made it prosper.

Genesis 40

 

     And after these things, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and his baker sinned against their lord, the king of Egypt. And Pharaoh was angry against 2 of his officers, against the chief cupbearer, and against the chief of the bakers. And he put them in custody in the house of the chief of executioners, into the prison where Joseph was confined.

     And the chief of executioners charged Joseph with them, and he served them: and they were in custody many days. And they both dreamed a dream, each man in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison.

     And Joseph came to them in the morning, and looked at them, and saw they were sad. And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in custody of his lord's house, Why do you look so sad today? 

     And they said, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said to them, Don’t interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me.

     And the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph, and said, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me and in the vine were 3 branches: it budded, blossomed, and produced ripe grapes.

     And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand. 

     And Joseph said to him, This is the interpretation of it: The 3 branches are 3 days. In 3 days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your place and you will deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, as you did before when you were his cupbearer.

     But think about me when it is well with you, and do kindness to me, and mention me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house for truly I was stolen out of the land of the Hebrews. And here I have done nothing for them to put me in the dungeon.

     When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, I also was in my dream, and saw this: I had 3 white baskets on my head, and in the top basket were of all manner white bread for Pharaoh. And the birds ate them out of the basket on my head.

     And Joseph answered and said, This is its interpretation: The 3 baskets are 3 days: In 3 days Pharaoh will lift up your head from off you and hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from off you.

     And it happened the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.

     And he restored the chief cupbearer to his cup bearing; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand. But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.

     But the chief cupbearer didn’t remember Joseph but forgot him. 

 

Genesis 41

 

     And at the end of 2 years of days, Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river. And out of the river came 7 cows beautiful of form and fat of flesh and they were eating in the reeds. And 7 other cows came up out of the river after them, bad of form and lean of flesh; and stood by the other cows on the edge of the river. And the bad looking cows ate up the 7 beautiful and fat fleshed cows. So Pharaoh awoke.

     And he slept and dreamed the second time: and, behold, 7 heads of grain came up on one stalk, fat and good. And, behold, 7 thin ears and blasted with the east wind sprouted after them. And the 7 thin ears devoured the 7 fat and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and saw it was a dream.

     In the morning his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men: and Pharaoh told them his dreams; but there was none that could interpret them to Pharaoh.

     Then the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, I remember my sin this day: Pharaoh was furious with his servants, and put me in prison in the chief executioner’s house, both me and the chief baker. And we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.

     And there was there with us a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the chief executioner; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he interpreted. And it happened as he interpreted to us, so it was; he restored me to my position, and he hanged him.

     Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him quickly out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his clothes, and came in to Pharaoh.

     And Pharaoh said to Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is no one that can interpret it: and I have heard that you can understand a dream to interpret it.

     And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.

     And Pharaoh said to Joseph, In my dream I stood on the bank of the river and watched and 7 cows came up out of the river, fat of flesh and beautiful of form; and they ate among the reeds. And, behold, 7 other cows came up after them, poor and bad looking of form and very lean of flesh, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for badness: And the lean and evil looking cows ate up the first 7 fat cows: And they went into their stomachs, it couldn’t be known that they had gone into their stomachs; but they were still as bad looking as at the beginning. So I awoke.

     And I saw in my dream, and, behold, 7 ears of grain came up in one stalk, full and good. And, behold, 7 ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprouted after them. And the thin ears devoured the 7 good ears: and I told this to the magicians, diviners, astrologers; but no one could tell it to me.

     And Joseph said to Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one: God has showed Pharaoh what He is about to do. The 7 good cows are 7 years; and the 7 good ears are 7 years: the dream is one.

     And the 7 thin and evil looking cows that came up after them are 7 years; and the 7 empty ears blasted with the east wind will be 7 years of famine.

     This is the thing I have said to Pharaoh: What God is about to do He showed Pharaoh. Behold, there coming 7 years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt. And there will rise after them 7 years of famine; and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine will consume the land, and the plenty won’t be remembered in the land because of famine following for it will be very severe.

     The dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

     Now let Pharaoh look for an intelligent and wise man and set him over the land of Egypt. Let Pharaoh do this: let him appoint officers over the land and take up a 5th of the land of Egypt in the 7 plentiful years.

     And let them gather all the food of these coming good years, and store the grain under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities.

     And that food will be a supply to the land against the 7 years of famine that will be in the land so the land perish not through the famine.

     And the word was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants. And Pharaoh said to his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom is the Spirit of God? 

     And Pharaoh said to Joseph, since God has shown you all this, there is no one so understanding and wise as you. You will be over my house, and according to your word all my people will be ruled: only in the throne I will be greater than you.

     And Pharaoh said to Joseph, See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it on Joseph's hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen, and put a gold chain around his neck, and made him to ride in the 2nd chariot that he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.

     And Pharaoh said to Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without you no man will lift his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnathpaaneah (treasury of the glorious rest); and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.

     And Joseph was 30 years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh and went throughout all the land of Egypt. And in the 7 plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls. And he gathered up all the food of the 7 years in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was around every city, stored in the same. And Joseph gathered grain as the sand of the sea, very much, until he quit counting; for it was without number.

     And to Joseph were born 2 sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare to him. And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he, has made me forget all my trouble, and all my father's house. And the name of the 2nd he called Ephraim: For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.

     And the 7 years of plenty in the land of Egypt ended. And the 7 years of famine began, as Joseph had said: and the famine was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was food. And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for food: and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, Go to Joseph; Do what he tells you. 

     And the famine was over all the face of the earth: And Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians; and the famine was severe in the land of Egypt. And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy because that the famine was so strong in all lands.

Genesis 42

 

     Now when Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, Why do you look at each other? And he said, Look, I have heard there is grain in Egypt: go down there, and buy for us from there; that we may live, and not die. 

     And Joseph's 10 brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob didn’t send with his brothers; for he said, So, no harm can happen to him. 

     And the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan. And Joseph was the governor over the land, and it was he that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brothers came and bowed themselves to him face down to the earth.

     And Joseph saw his brothers, and he knew them, but made himself foreign to them, and spoke harshly to them; and he said to them, Where are you from? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

     And Joseph recognized his brothers, but they didn’t recognize them him. And Joseph remembered the dreams he dreamed of them, and said to them, You are spies; you came to see the nakedness of the land. 

     And they said to him, No, my lord, your servants came to buy food. We are all one man's sons; we are honest men, your servants are not spies.

     And he said to them, No!, You came to see the nakedness of the land. 

     And they said, Your servants are 12 brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and see, the youngest is today with our father, and one is not.

     And Joseph said to them, It is as I said to you, You’re spies. You will be tested this way, by the life of Pharaoh you won’t leave, unless your youngest brother comes here. Send one of you, and let him bring your brother, and you will be kept in prison, that your words may be tested, whether truth is with you: or else, by the life of Pharaoh you are surely spies. And he gathered them into prison 3 days.

     Joseph said to them on the 3rd day, Do this and live; for I fear God: If you are true men, let one of your brothers be bound in the house where you are imprisoned. And you go, carry for the famine of your houses.

     But bring your youngest brother to me, and let your words be confirmed, and you won’t be executed. And that’s what they did.

     And they said one to another, We are truly guilty because of our brother for we saw the anguish of his soul, when he begged us, and we wouldn’t listen; that’s why this trouble has come on us.

     And Reuben answered them, saying, Didn’t I tell you, Don’t sin against the child; and you wouldn’t listen? therefore, his blood is required. And they didn’t know that Joseph understood them; for he spoke to them by an interpreter.

     And he turned away from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and spoke with them, and took Simeon from them, and bound him before their eyes.

     Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with grain, and to return each man's money into his sack, and give them provision for the way: and one did this to them. And they loaded their donkeys with the grain and left.

     And as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey feed in the inn, he saw his money; for, behold, it was in the mouth of the sack. And he said to his brothers, My money is returned; and, see, it’s in my sack: and their heart’s sank in them, and they were each terrified, saying one to another, What is this that God has done to us?

     And they came to Jacob their father to the land of Canaan, and told him all that happened to them; saying, The man, who is the lord of the land, spoke harshly to us, and took us for spies of the country. And we said to him, We are honest men; we aren’t spies. We are 12 brothers, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is today with our father in the land of Canaan.

     And the man, the lord of the country, said to us, By this I will know that you are honest; leave one of your brothers here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and go and bring your youngest brother to me: then I will know that you aren’t spies, but that you are honest: then I will give you your brother, and you will trade in the land.

     And when they emptied their sacks, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack: and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.

     And their father Jacob said to them, You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and you will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.

     And Reuben said to his father, You may kill my 2 sons, if I don’t bring him back to you: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to you again. And he said, My son won’t go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if harm comes him on the way in the way you go, then you will bring down my gray hair in sorrow to the grave.

 

 

Genesis 43

 

     And the famine was massive in the land. And when they had eaten up the grain they had brought out of Egypt, their father said to them, Go again, buy us a little food. And Judah spoke to him, saying, The man repeated firmly to us, saying, You won’t see my face, unless your brother is with you. If you’ll send our brother with us, we’ll go down and buy you food, but if you won’t send him, we won’t go down for the man said to us, You won’t see my face, unless your brother is with you.

     And Israel said, Why did you do this to me, to tell the man you had another brother? 

     And they said, The man asked specifically about us and our family, saying, Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother? and we told him these words. Could we know he would say, Bring your brother down?

     And Judah said to Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will rise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and our little ones. I will be the guarantee for him. From my hand require him if I don’t bring him back to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever. For if we hadn’t lingered, we would have already returned the 2nd time.

     And their father Israel said to them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your baskets, and carry the man a gift, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds. And take double money in your hand, the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; perhaps it was an oversight. Take your brother, and rise, go again to the man. And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.

     And the men took the gift, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph. And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and kill, and prepare; for these men will dine with me at noon.

     And the man did as Joseph said; the man brought the men into Joseph's house.

     And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph's house; and they said, We are brought in here because of the money that was returned in our sacks the first time; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall on us, and take us for slaves, and our donkeys.

     And they came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they communed with him at the door of the house, and said, O sir, we came down the first time to buy food. And when we came to the inn, we opened our sacks, and behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand. And we have brought other money in our hands to buy food: we don’t know who put our money in our sacks.

     And he said, Peace to you, don’t be afraid: your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out to them.

     And the man brought the men into Joseph's house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their donkeys feed. And they prepared the gift for when Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they would eat there.

     And when Joseph came home, they brought him the gift that was in their hand into the house and bowed themselves to him to the earth.

     And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive? And they answered, Your servant, our father is in good health, he is still alive. And they bowed down and fell before him.

     And he lifted his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your younger brother, about whom you told me? And he said, God be gracious to you, my son.

     And Joseph made hurried; for his emotions deeply yearned for his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered his chamber and wept there.

     And he washed his face, and went out, and restrained himself and said, Set out the food. And they served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians don’t eat with the Hebrews; that is disgusting to the Egyptians.

     And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marveled one at another. 

     And he took and sent portions to them from before him: but Benjamin's portion was 5 times more than any of theirs. And they drank and were merry with him. 

Genesis 44

 

     And he commanded the one over his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth. And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, and his grain money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

     At the morning light, the men were sent away, they and their donkeys. And when they were gone out of the city, and still not far off, Joseph said to the one over his house, Up, follow the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, Why have you rewarded evil for good? Isn’t this it in which my lord drinks, and by what he divines? You have done evil in this. And he overtook them and said these same words to them.

     And they said to him, Why do you say these words? Far be it from your servants to do this thing. Look, the money we found in our sacks' mouths, we brought back to you out of the land of Canaan: how then could we steal out of your lord's house silver or gold? With whoever of you servants it be found, both let him die, and we will be my lord's slaves. 

     And he said, Now let it be according to your words: he with whom it is found will be my servant; and you will be blameless. Then they quickly took down every man’s sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

     And he searched, and began at the eldest, and finished at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack. Then they tore their clothes, and loaded every man his ass, and returned to the city.

     And Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house; for he was still there: and they fell before him on the ground. And Joseph said to them, What deed is this that you have done? Don’t you know a man like me would certainly divine?

     And Judah said, What can we say to my lord? what can we speak? or how can we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants: behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

     And he said, Far be it from me to do that: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he will be my servant; and you go up to your father in peace.

     Then Judah came near him, and said, Oh my lord, let your servant speak a word in my lord's ears, and don’t let your anger burn against your servant: for you are as Pharaoh. My lord asked his servants, saying, Do you have a father, or a brother? And we said to my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.

     And you said to your servants, Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him. And we said to my lord, The boy cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die. And you said to your servants, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face. And when we came up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food. And we said, We can’t go down: if our youngest brother is with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man's face, unless our youngest brother is with us. And your servant my father said to us, You know that my wife bare me 2 sons: And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I’ve not seen him since, and if you also take this one from me, and he is harmed, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

     So if I come to your servant my father, and the boy isn’t with us; seeing that his soul is bound up in the boy’s soul, when he sees the boy is not with us, he will die: and your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to the grave.

     For your servant became a pledge for the boy to my father, saying, If I don’t bring him back to you, then I will bear the blame to my father forever. Now please, let your servant remain instead of the boy a slave to my lord; and let the boy go up with his brothers. How can I go up to my father, and the boy isn’t with me? And I see the evil that will find my father.

 

Genesis 45

 

    Then Joseph couldn’t restrain himself before all those that stood by him; and he cried, Cause every man to leave me. And no man with him while Joseph made himself known to his brothers. 

     And he gave in to weeping, and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard. And Joseph said to his brothers, I am Joseph. Is my father still alive? And his brothers couldn’t answer him; for they were terrified at his presence.

     And Joseph said to his brothers, Come to me. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt. Now don’t be grieved, or angry with yourselves, that you sold me here: for God sent me before you to preserve life. For 2 years famine has been in the land: and there are 5 years more, when there will no plowing or harvest.

     And God sent me before you to preserve your descendants in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So now it wasn’t you that sent me here, but God: and He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.

     Hurry. Go up to my father, and say to him, Joseph, your son says, God has made me lord of all Egypt: come down to me, don’t delay. And you will dwell in the land of Goshen (drawing near), and you will be near me, you, and your children, and your children's children, and your flocks, and your herds, and all that you have. And I will feed you there, for there are still 5 years of famine; then you and your household, and all that you have won’t come to poverty.

     And behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaks to you. Tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that you have seen; and hurry and bring my father down here. 

     And he fell on his brother Benjamin's neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept on his neck.

    And he kissed all his brothers and wept on them: and after that his brothers talked with him.

     And the report was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying, Joseph's brothers have come: and it was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and his servants.

     And Pharaoh said to Joseph, Say to your brothers, Do this, load you animals, and go to the land of Canaan and bring your father and your households and come to me: and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and you will eat the fat of the land.

     Now you are commanded, do this; take wagons from the land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. Also don’t regard your possessions; for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours.

     And the children of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way. To all of them he gave each man changes of clothing; but to Benjamin he gave 300 pieces of silver, and 5 changes of raiment.

     And he sent this to his father: 10 donkeys loaded laden with the good things of Egypt, and 10 she donkeys loaded with grain and bread and food for his father on the way.

     So he sent his brothers away, and they left: and he said to them, Don’t argue on the way. 

     And they went up out of Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan to Jacob their father and told him, saying, Joseph is still alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob's heart fainted, for he didn’t believe them. 

     And they told him all the words of Joseph, that he had said to them: and when he saw the wagons Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived. And Israel said, This is great; Joseph my son is still alive: I will go and see him before I die.

Genesis 47

 

     Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh saying, My father and my brothers, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, has come out of the land of Canaan; and behold, they are in the land of Goshen.

     And he took some of his brothers, five men, and set them before Pharaoh. And Pharaoh said to his brothers, What is your occupation? And they said to Pharaoh, Your servants are shepherds, both we, and also our fathers.

     They said to Pharaoh, We have come to stay in the land for there is no pasture for the flocks; for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan: now please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.

     And Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, Your father and your brothers have come to you: The land of Egypt is before you; make your father and brothers dwell in the best of the land; let them dwell in the land of Goshen: and if you know any able men among them, then make them keepers over my livestock.

     And Joseph brought in Jacob his father and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. 

     And Pharaoh said to Jacob, How old are you?

     And Jacob said to Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are 130 years: The days of the years of my life have been few and evil, and have not reached the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage (a journey to a holy or sacred place-heaven).

     And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from before Pharaoh.

     Joseph placed (dwell) his father and his brothers and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded. And Joseph sustained his father, and his brothers, and all his father's household with food, according to their families.

     And there was no food in all the land; for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted because of the famine.

    And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the grain they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house.

     And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph, and said, Give us food: for why should we die in your presence? for the money is gone.

     And Joseph said, Give your livestock; and I will give you for your cattle, if the money is gone.

     And they brought their livestock to Joseph: and Joseph gave them food in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds, and for the donkeys: and he fed them with food for all their livestock for that year.

     When that year was ended, they came to him the second year, and said to him, We will not hide from my lord, how our money is gone; my lord also has our herds of livestock. There is nothing left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands.

     Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for food, and we and our land will be servants to Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, that the land be not desolate.

     And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians, every man sold his field, because the famine prevailed over them: so the land became Pharaoh's.

     And as for the people, he moved them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt to the other end.

     Only he didn’t buy the land of the priests; for the priests had a portion assigned them of Pharaoh, and ate their portion that Pharaoh gave them: so they didn’t sell their lands.

     Then Joseph said to the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: look, here is seed for you, and you will sow the land.

     And when the harvest comes, you will give the 5th part to Pharaoh, and 4 parts will be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for those of your households, and for food for your little ones.

     And they said, You have saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants.

     And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh would have a 5th, except the land of the priests only, which didn’t become Pharaoh's.

     And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had property there, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly.

     And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt 17 years: so, the years of Jacob’s life were a 147 years. 

     And the time drew near for Israel to die: he called his son Joseph and said to him, If I have found grace in your sight, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me. Don’t bury me in Egypt. But I will lie with my fathers, and you will carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying place. 

     And he said, I will do as you have said. And he said, Swear to me. And he swore to him. And Israel bowed himself on the bed's head.

Genesis 46

 

    And Israel journeyed with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, I am here.

     And he said, I am God, the God of your father: don’t be afraid to go down to Egypt; for there I will make of you a great nation: I will go down with you into Egypt; and I will certainly bring you up again: and Joseph will put his hand on your eyes (closing in death).

     And Jacob arose from Beersheba and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons that Pharaoh had sent to carry him. And they took their livestock, and their goods they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him: His sons, and his grandsons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed he brought with him into Egypt.

     And these are the names of the children of Israel, that came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn. And the sons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Phallu, and Hezron, and Carmi.

     And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman.

     And the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

     And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zarah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul.

     And the sons of Issachar; Tola, and Phuvah, and Job, and Shimron.

     And the sons of Zebulun; Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel. These are the sons of Leah, that she bore to Jacob in Padanaram, with his daughter Dinah: all the souls of his sons and his daughters were 33.

     And the sons of Gad; Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli.

     And the sons of Asher; Jimnah, and Ishuah, and Isui, and Beriah, and Serah their sister: and the sons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel. These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bore unto Jacob, even 16 souls.

     The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife (Ishah, bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh); Joseph, and Benjamin. 

     And to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bore to him.

     And the sons of Benjamin were Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard.

     These are the sons of Rachel, that were born to Jacob: all the souls were 14.

     And the sons of Dan; Hushim.

     And the sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem. These are the sons of Bilhah, who Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and she bore these to Jacob: all the souls were 7.

     All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, that came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were 66.

     And the sons of Joseph, that were born to him in Egypt, were 2 souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, that came into Egypt, were 70.

     And he sent Judah before him to Joseph, to direct his face to Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen.

Genesis 48

   

    And after these things, someone told Joseph, Look, your father is sick: and he took with him his 2 sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. And one told Jacob, and said, Behold, your son Joseph has come to you: and Israel strengthened himself, and sat on the bed.

     And Jacob said to Joseph, God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me, and said to me, Behold, I will make you fruitful, and multiply you, and I will make of you a congregation of people; and will give this land to your seed after you for an everlasting possession.

     And now your two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they will be mine. And your offspring, that you bare after them, will be yours, and will be called after the name of their brothers in their inheritance.

     And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was a little way to come to Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath; that is Bethlehem.

     And Israel saw Joseph's sons, and said, Who are these?

     And Joseph said to his father, They are my sons, whom God has given me in this place. And he said, Bring them to me, and I will bless them. Now Israel’s eyes were dim for age, so he could not see. And he brought them near to him; and he kissed them and embraced them.

     And Israel said to Joseph, I didn’t think I would see your face: and look at this, God has showed me your children also.

     And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. And Joseph took them both, Ephraim at his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh at his left hand toward Israel's right hand and brought them near to him.

     And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it on Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh's head, guiding his hands with understanding, for Manasseh was the firstborn.

     And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers’ Abraham and Isaac walked, the God Who fed me all my life long to this day, the Angel Who redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers’ Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

     And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head. And Joseph said to his father, No, my father: this is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.

     And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also will become a people, and he also will be great: but truly his younger brother will be greater than he, and his seed will become fulness of nations.

     And he blessed them that day, saying, In you will Israel bless, saying, God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

     And Israel said to Joseph, Behold, I am dying: but God will be with you, and bring you again to the land of your fathers. And I will give to you one spur (a tongue of land descending from a hill) above your brothers, that I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.

Genesis 49

 

     And Jacob called to his sons and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what will happen to you in the days to come. Gather yourselves together and hear, sons of Jacob; and listen to your father Israel.

     Reuben, you are my firstborn, my strength, and the beginning of my power, the excellence of dignity, and the excellence of power: Unstable as water, you will not rest; (rest in the Lord, wait patiently for Him and He will exalt you to inherit the land-Psalm 37:7) because you went up to your father's bed; then you defiled it: he went up to my chamber.

     Simeon and Levi are brothers; their weapons are tools of violence. Don’t let my soul enter their counsel; or my spirit their assembly, my glory, don’t unite with them: for in their anger they killed a man, and in delight they lamed an ox. Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

     Judah, your brothers will praise you. Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies; your father's children will bow down before you. Judah is a lion's cub: you rise up from the prey. He stoops, he couches like a lion, and as a lioness; who can rouse him? (a lion can run 100 yards in 5 seconds and throw a calf over a 12 ft fence). 

     The scepter will not depart from Judah, or a lawgiver from between his feet (birthed), until Shiloh ('He whose it is'-the Lord Jesus) comes; and to Him will be the gathering of the people. 

     Binding his donkey’s foal to the vine, and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes: His eyes will be red (or dark or sparkling) with wine, and his teeth white with milk.

     Zebulun will dwell at the haven of the sea; and he will be for a haven of ships; and his border will be to Zidon.

     Issachar is a strong donkey couching down between 2 burdens (or sheepfolds): And he saw a resting place that was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant to tribute.

     Dan will judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. Dan will be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that bites the horse heels, so that his rider falls backward.

     I have waited for Your salvation (help, deliverance), O Lord.

     Gad, a troop will overcome him: but he will overcome at the last.

     Out of Asher his bread will be fat, and he will give royal dainties.

     Naphtali is a dear let loose: he sends beautiful words.

     Joseph is a fruitful son, a fruitful son by a spring whose daughters go over the wall. The archers have bitterly grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him: But his bow remains in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel:)

     Even by the God of your father, who will help you; and by the Almighty, who will bless you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lie under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb:

     The blessings of your father have prevailed above the blessings of my ancestors to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they will be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was Nazarite (set apart to God) from his brothers.

     Benjamin will tear as a wolf: in the morning he will devour the prey, and at night he will divide the plunder.

     All these are the 12 tribes of Israel: and this is what their father spoke to them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them.

     And he charged them, and said to them, I am to be gathered to my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite, in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a burying place.

     There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah. The purchase of the field and of the cave that is there was from the children of Heth.

     And when Jacob had made an ended of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and died, and was gathered to his people.

 

 

Genesis 50

 

     And Joseph fell on his father's face, and wept on him, and kissed him. And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel. And 40 days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those that are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him 70 days.

     And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spoke to the house of Pharaoh, saying, If I have found grace in your eyes, please speak, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, My father made me swear, saying, I am dying: bury me in my grave I have made for myself in the land of Canaan, bury me there. Now please let me go up, and bury my father, and return.

     And Pharaoh said, Go and bury your father, as he made you swear. And Joseph went up to bury his father: and all the servants of Pharaoh went up with him, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, and all the house of Joseph, and his brothers, and his father's house. They only left their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, in the land of Goshen. And it was a very great company went up with him, both chariots and horsemen.

     And they came to the threshing floor of thorns, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and grievous mourning: and he made a mourning for his father 7 days.

     And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of thorns, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: so the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan.

     And his sons did to him as he commanded them for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a burying place of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.

     And Joseph returned to Egypt, he, and his brothers and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father. 

     And when Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, perhaps Joseph will hate us, and will repay us all the evil that we did to him. And they sent a messenger to Joseph, saying, Your father commanded before he died, saying, Say to Joseph, Please forgive the trespass of your brothers, and their sin; for they did you evil: and now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father. And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

     And his brothers went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we are your servants.

     And Joseph said to them, Don’t be afraid: am I in the place of God? You, you thought evil against me; but God meant it for good, to bring about as it is this day, to save a great many people alive.

     Now don’t be afraid: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them and spoke to their hearts.

     And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived 110 years. And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the 3rd generation: also the children of Machir the son of Manasseh were born on Joseph's knees.

     And Joseph said to his brothers, I’m dying: God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and you will carry up my bones from here. So Joseph died, being 110 years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
